The role of Undergraduate Design Intern is intended to start in Summer 2026.

An internship is a temporary position within 3M. Interns typically work a full-time schedule throughout a 10–12-week assignment. This position is limited to working 899 hours per service credit year.

The Safety and Industrial Business Group (SIBG) at 3M offers a diverse range of products designed to enhance safety, productivity, and efficiency across various industries. Key product categories include personal safety (respiratory, hearing, eye, and fall protection), abrasives (coated, bonded, and non-woven), adhesives and tapes (industrial adhesives and various tapes), electrical markets (electrical tapes, wire connectors, and cable management), automotive aftermarket (collision repair and automotive tapes and adhesives), and industrial and safety markets (safety solutions and industrial maintenance products).

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As an Undergraduate UX Design Intern on the Safety & Industrial Business Group (SIBG) digital tools team, you will help shape user-centered digital experiences that support industrial safety, productivity, and efficiency. You’ll work closely with UX Designers, Design Researchers, and technical and business partners on projects that make a meaningful impact within 3M’s digital ecosystem. You’ll receive mentorship, structured onboarding, and hands-on opportunities that strengthen your skills in UX design, research, and digital product development.
Key Expectations for an Undergraduate UX Design Intern:
Be Motivated
You’ll take ownership of your work and bring a sense of initiative to each assignment. While support and guidance are always available, we’re looking for someone who is organized, reliable, and ready to contribute.
- Contribute to UX and UI design for digital tools and software used in industrial and safety applications.
- Build your skills through project work, designer feedback, and mentorship.
- Apply user-centered design methods with support from senior UX Designers and Researchers.
- Assist with user research, synthesize findings, and translate insights into design recommendations.
Be Collaborative
We value curiosity, openness, and a willingness to learn new ways of working. Our projects rely on great communication, strong teamwork, and people who can advocate for the user experience with a variety of stakeholders.
- Participate in design critiques, workshops, and cross-functional project discussions.
- Create UX deliverables such as user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and design documentation.
- Learn and apply 3M’s digital and brand guidelines to ensure clarity and consistency across experiences.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree, or higher, from an accredited institution.
- Experience using Figma
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
- Working knowledge using design tools, such as Adobe Creative Cloud and Miro.
- Completion of Junior year (6 semesters) by the start of the internship.
- A growth mindset, creativity, and genuine passion for design.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to communicate design decisions clearly.
- Collaborative working style and strong communication skills.
- Self-motivated, curious, and proactive in your approach to problem-solving.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
Work location:
- This Role has an on-site working model, with the employees working at least four (4) days a week in the office at 3M Center, located in Maplewood, MN
Travel: May include up to 10% domestic travel
