This position reports to

Service Manager

Your role and responsibilities

The maritime world runs on electrical engineering and automation solutions. At ABB Marine & Ports, you work in an international playing field where you are indispensable to our customers. Oil tankers, passenger ships and icebreakers: as a service engineer, you will have to deal with them all. With clients at home and abroad, you will be invaluable to this sector. You'll work on ships with 100,000-horsepower main engines, but also on diesel-electric-powered ships with 4-megawatt Azipods. What will you do at ABB? The world is your working area. Because where one time your help is needed on a naval ship in Den Helder, the next job will have you working in the port of Singapore on a passenger ship. As a service engineer, you ensure that our customers can continue their work properly, safely and securely. Within Marine & Ports, we have 3 different disciplines on which our service engineers focus. You ensure that metre-long ships manoeuvre smoothly and safely through all seas and world ports. At ‘Drives’, for instance, we work on the propulsion of ships. In ‘Power’, the focus is on switchboards, among other things. You maintain and upgrade these, in addition to troubleshooting. Automation' is where we make various automated systems function optimally. Think of propulsion control and power management systems, main engine control and security systems. In this role, the focus is more on switchboards. Your team You will work in a team with 20 other engineers who are all divided under the 3 disciplines within Marine & Ports. Within this team, there are r other engineers who, like you, deal with breakers and switchboards. Although you mainly work independently at the customer site, there is good cooperation and coordination with colleagues within your team. In case of questions or problems, everyone knows where to find each other. In the Marine & Ports operations team, the five coordinators take care of everything, from request to invoicing of an assignment. This also includes hotel accommodation and transport from the airport for an assignment abroad. The back office, sales department and project team complete the organisation. In the projects, we also expect input from you as a service engineer, because after all, you have the practical knowledge. Your responsibilities are: - Fixing simple to very complex failures on ships and platforms. And very occasionally in an industrial environment. - maintaining breakers and switchboards. - commissioning new equipment. A lot depends on this: fortunately, you can always rely on other specialists at ABB. - providing technical support, both remotely and physically at the customer site. - carrying out (or having carried out) work ‘onsite’, working with colleagues, subcontractors and the customer. - preparing reports and recording work administratively. This is also part of the job. - advising customers on maintenance and possible improvements.

Qualifications for the role

  • Can we call you a real adventurer? Because you are someone who likes to see something of the world. You see working abroad as a great adventure. You also like the variety of a job closer to home. What also characterises you is a positive-critical outlook combined with your own opinion. Because being a bit headstrong can yield the best results. You also have a great sense of responsibility, because on location you are the person who has to do it for the customer. You are happy to take on that role. Furthermore, you have:
  • a higher professional education level in a technical field, for example electrical engineering, mechatronics or mechanical engineering.
  • several years of experience in a technical, service-oriented position.
  • experience with technical processes, preferably already within the maritime sector.
  • a good command of the English language. Knowledge of the Dutch language is an advantage.
  • a driving licence (B).
  • For this position, you will be working a lot for clients abroad. You are therefore willing to spend periods away from home, alternating with being at home.
