Your Role and Responsibilities

Join ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden, and be part of our global innovation engine. As an R&D Scientist, you will work at the forefront of technology, contributing to solutions that shape ABB’s future within sustainable automation, digitalization, and electrification.

You will collaborate closely with leading experts across research centers, business areas, universities, start-ups, and industrial partners worldwide. In a creative and flexible team environment, you will explore, develop, and prototype innovative technologies that strengthen ABB’s technological leadership, today and for the future.

Your Impact and Responsibilities:

  • Bring ideas to life: Design and build proof-of-concepts and prototypes that demonstrate your research outcomes and their potential for implementation.
  • Co-create solutions: Collaborate with colleagues, customers, university partners, and ABB business units to identify opportunities and develop project concepts that address real world challenges and emerging technology trends.
  • Share your expertise: Contribute to the scientific community through publications, patent applications, and technical reports, establishing yourself as a thought leader in your field.
  • Build connections that matter: Expand your professional network internally and externally, fostering relationships with academic institutions and industry partners that support your growth and career development.

Qualifications for the role

  • You hold a PhD in automatic control or related field, OR Master's degree with relevant professional experience. We value diverse educational paths and practical expertise.
  • Strong background in modeling and simulation of dynamical systems. Experience or genuine interest in energy systems or process control is valuable—we support your growth in these areas.
  • Knowledge in optimization and machine learning methods is highly desirable.
  • Track record of quality research outputs such as publications in scientific conferences, journals, or equivalent industry contributions. We recognize various forms of professional achievement.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and Python. Familiarity with both is beneficial, but strong skills in one with willingness to learn the other is sufficient.
  • Experience or curiosity in designing and implementing algorithms in modern edge computing solutions is a plus.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and exploring the intersection of classical control theory and AI applications in autonomous process operations. We value curiosity and adaptability.
