Internship in Drive Systems (80-100%)
ABB
At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we’ll give you what you need to make it happen. It won’t always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you’ll never run alone. Run what runs the world.
This Position reports to:
R&D Executive Engineer
Your role and responsibilities:
In this role, you will have the opportunity to gain vocational experience through a temporary work placement. Each day, you will acquire knowledge by performing tasks as directed. You will also showcase your skills by supporting ABB’s operations and enhancing personal education/employment opportunities.
The work model for the role is: #LI-Hybrid
Join our Drive Systems experts to develop and integrate a high-fidelity excitation unit model into our Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulator. You’ll begin by modeling the excitation unit and progress to integration with control boards and the system-level HIL rig, enabling controller verification, commissioning rehearsal, and disturbance testing in a safe, repeatable environment. This internship is ideal for candidates with a solid grounding in electrical engineering, especially power electronics and electrical machines and practical experience in MATLAB/Simulink, Typhoon HIL Control Center or similar simulation platforms.
You will be mainly accountable for:
- Integrate the model with controller boards and deploy it on the Typhoon HIL platform, including basic HIL test benches.
- Automate HIL test cases, analyze system performance, and document findings in technical notes and the final report.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to support ABB’s operations and ensure smooth project execution.
- Contribute to customer‑focused solution development by understanding application needs and ABB technologies.
- Develop a physics‑based model of the excitation unit, including brushed and brushless excitation systems.
Qualifications for the role:
- Bachelor’s/Master’s level studies in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering in areas such as mechatronics, control or power electronics.
- Keen interest in real‑time simulation and the industrial or marine electric drives environment, with motivation to contribute sustainable innovation.
- Solid theoretical and practical foundation in power electronics and electrical machines (e.g., synchronous machines, excitation systems).
- Proficiency in simulation tools such as Simulink and real‑time simulation platforms, plus the ability to interpret technical documentation.
- Experience or interest in converter modeling, control‑system implementation, and real‑time HIL environments (e.g., Typhoon HIL).
- Basic scripting skills (Python/MATLAB) and familiarity with MV/LV drive systems or commissioning practices are an advantage.
- You are proficient in communicating in English. German language skills are of an advantage.
- You hold a current valid VISA/work permit for Switzerland or a confirmation for a mandatory internship from your university.
