The Opportunity
Our location in Abbott Park (Lake Bluff), IL in our Transfusion Medicine (TM) division currently has an opportunity for an Engineering Technician.
The Engineering Technician within Abbott Transfusion Medicine will provide technician support for Engineering Department projects. They will focus on the implementation and maintaining of Facilities, Utilities and Equipment (FUE) supporting the world-wide manufacture of Biologics and Transfusion Instrument test kits to meet daily production schedules while enhancing productivity and product quality. This includes activities, such as, but not limited to, machine shop operations, material (commodity, packaging, etc.) testing, manufacturing, process and laboratory equipment / Instrumentation installation, startup and qualification, and related facilities activities. The Engineering Technician provides guidance to other Abbott Technicians and outside contractors to assure a timely and correct completion of assigned activities.
What You’ll Work On
Projects focused on Facilities, Utilities and Equipment (FUE) supporting all site Manufacturing areas including fermentation, biologics production, and automated fill/finish of instrument testing products
Collaborate with leading engineers and cross-functional teams to support validation / qualification of Facilities, Utilities and Equipment (FUE) including process equipment, automated equipment and related software systems.
Must be capable of working independently and resolving design conflicts and/or ambiguous instructions.
Must work well with multi-disciplined engineers and scientists and cross-functional members in understanding task requirements and communicating to other project technicians.
Must be able to adapt to changing requirements and meet project commitments without sacrificing workmanship quality.
Must be able to perform troubleshooting methodologically; diagnose and resolve issues with equipment and systems.
Must be able to help install new systems or equipment and provide training to maintenance staff on proper upkeep
Must be able to maintain detailed records of tests, inspections, and repairs/work performed on systems, ensuring compliance with engineering, safety and quality standards
Prepare technical recommendations and help implementation of improvements in processes and systems to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
Maintains positive attitude and cooperative relationships with the site organizations
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma and two years of qualifying experience - OR - Junior college (or apprenticeship) certification in their selected field.
Six (6) years of related experience may be substituted for the two-year certificate. The six years may not be counted twice for both education and experience.
Experience with technical troubleshooting and support of both new and aging Facilities, Utilities and Equipment (FUE).
Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment.
Must be capable of good verbal and written communication skills.
Must have excellent interpersonal skills to successfully interface with production, engineering staff, and various development and maintenance groups.
Must be a self-starter, capable of organizing his/her work as well as the work of assigned Abbott technical persons, and or outside contractors.
Must be capable of providing technical assistance in his/her selected area as well as recommend alternatives to the lead engineer or development person.
Must be capable of providing training to production operators in the use of equipment.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and know how to prioritize the workday to ensure deadlines are met.
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on electrical or mechanical skills / experience out of any of the following manufacturing companies/industries, eg. medical device, medical diagnostics products, Defense/Aerospace, Aviation, Automotive, Food & Beverage, and/or Pharmaceutical
Associate Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree
Knowledge of PLC programming (e.g. Rockwell, or similar)
Knowledge of CAD, AUTOCAD and/or Solidworks (reviewing, creating and approving drawings)
Strong fluency in English and Spanish a plus
Knowledge of Maximo and/or SAP
Be familiar with tools within the Continuous Improvement (eg 6 Sigma, Lean, Kaizen, etc.) and participate in problem resolution

The base pay for this position is $28.20 – $56.40 per hour. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
