The Opportunity
This position works out of our Lake Forest, IL location in the Diagnostics division.
We’re empowering smarter medical and economic decision-making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott’s diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.
As the Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs), you are key members of the Medical Affairs organization. The roles centers on medical and scientific engagement with Abbott internal and external stakeholders (including research teams, healthcare professionals and providers). The focus of this role is on interacting with and supporting the needs of Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs). MSLs work to communicate information and facilitate dialogue about Abbott's Core Diagnostics marketed products, in a strictly scientific, non-promotional manner, and in full compliance with applicable national laws and regulations, guidelines, codes of conduct, Abbott's policies and procedures and accepted standards of best practice.
The MSL serves to advance science and standards of care for patients, healthcare providers and payers, and ensure they can access all the practical and clinically relevant information and solutions they need to use Abbott's products efficiently and safely.
What You’ll Work On
- Provide scientific and technical leadership to ensure professional and credible relationships with thought leaders and external experts of strategic importance to Abbott.
- Support internal teams such as sales and marketing and members of the Affiliate Brand Team to develop their scientific and technical expertise through the delivery of scientific update presentations. Work collaboratively and cross-functionally with other in-field members while retaining functional independence.
- Serve as a point of contact within the Medical Affairs team for thought leaders and external experts within an assigned geographic area in order to satisfy their needs for scientific knowledge in a therapeutic area and, when requested, relevant Abbott medicines, to support their safe, effective and appropriate use.
- Deliver credible presentations on scientific matters to physicians, individually or in groups (meetings, clinical sessions, etc.), where requested, but with the focus on KOLs.
- Facilitate medical and scientific field intelligence – for example, competitor research and medical strategies, educational activities – and communicate, where appropriate, within the Company.
- Attend relevant scientific meetings and Conferences. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop summaries of key data and other scientifically relevant information to inform Abbott strategic priorities and initiatives.
- Provide expert medical/scientific advice for assigned products and related therapeutic areas, including responding to requests for scientific/technical information.
- Deliver training to sales forces and other departments; develop and update relevant training materials.
Required Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (PhD, PharmD) with 3+ years’ experience OR Master’s/NP/RN license with 5+ years clinical experience.
- Demonstrated diagnostics literacy (infectious disease, lab workflows, assay performance, clinical utility) and ability to interpret and communicate complex data to diverse audiences.
- Direct clinical experience in infectious disease diagnostics and application to patient care preferred.
- Outstanding communication, scientific writing, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills; ability to translate evidence into practical clinical context.
- Willingness to travel 30–60%

- Knowledge of infectious diseases and respiratory diagnostics; ability to stay current with literature, guidelines, and assay performance data.
- Skilled in KOL engagement and insight generation to inform strategy and lifecycle planning.
- Strong ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable education; adept at data storytelling and education across clinical and laboratory stakeholders; comfortable in both point-of-care and laboratory environments
- Compliance mindset: adheres to medical independence and fair-balance principles.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.

The base pay for this position is $86,700.00 – $173,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
