The Opportunity

This position will provide support to our Medical Devices / Structural Heart business. Our medical devices help more than 10,000 people have healthier hearts, improve quality of life for thousands of people living with chronic pain and movement disorders, and liberate more than 500,000 people with diabetes from routine fingersticks. Our business purpose is to restore health and improve quality of life through the design and provision of device and management solutions for the treatment of structural heart disease.

As the Environmental Health and Safety Lead will supports the development of health, safety and environmental management systems and their implementation and maintenance for Abbott in accordance with recognized standards. Partners with management to establish targets and objectives related to environmental health and safety with operational leadership. Provides effective leadership/support to operational leadership on compliance with associated regulatory requirements including but not necessarily limited to (OSHA, EPA, DOT, IATA, DHS, MPCS, IFC).

What You’ll Do

  • Ensure a consistent approach to the establishment of objectives and processes to deliver results in accordance with Abbot Safety and Environmental policies.
  • Ensure that EHS performance meets or exceeds operations established legal and policy requirements. Ensure the control of occupational health and safety risks and the affectivity of the established monitoring methods.
  • Support the development of division environmental health and safety policies/programs. Participates in the development of targets and objectives related to EHS with Operations in order to meet corporate objectives. Effectively communicates environmental health and safety targets and objectives within the site.
  • Provide input on performance and recommendations for improvement. Environmental response review, critique and update.
  • Communicate environmental emergencies to GEMR. Manages compliance permit process and periodic reports.
  • Communicates EMS expectations. Assists with CAPA closure and determining root cause and corrective action effectiveness.
  • Investigates non-conformity, assure root cause analysis, review and completion. Provides input and support for Management Review process.
  • Supports legal and regulatory compliance audits and other regulatory activities. Reviews operations for other compliance activities.
  • Manages/oversees day to day environmental activities to ensure compliance. Provides work direction and support to EHS Specialists/Engineers.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of Federal, State and local regulatory requirements that impact Abbott operations. Develops EHS databases for managing environmental health and safety target initiatives.
  • Effectively supports the management of the department budget. Hires and retains a diverse, highly qualified staff and provides ongoing performance feedback. Sets goals which align to department plans and manages the execution of goals through coaching and mentoring. Maintains a safe and professional work environment.
  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned. Works with standard office equipment, telephone, cellular phone, and personal computer. Operates a motor vehicle for trips to various Company sites and outside vendor, field, and customer locations; and to commute to various airports for airline travel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the Health and Safety field and program management experience. Safety programs management and Environmental reports knowledge.

  • Good communication skills verbal and written in English, Spanish, and regulatory language.

  • Ability to navigate and interpret OSHA regulations, fire codes and applicable regulations.

  • Expected to function with little direction and be able to independently drive complex projects to completion.

  • Solid understanding of the technical skills necessary to perform traditional EHS duties but at a higher more independent level.

  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and daily responsibilities.

  • Ability to discern and appropriately communicate sensitive issues.

  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross division business unit model preferred.

  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results.

  • Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment.

  • Strong organizational, planning, and follow-up skills and ability to hold others accountable.

  • Ability to travel 25%, including international locations.

Preferred qualifications:

Master's degree in occupational health and safety or related field.

OSHA 30hrs, Hazwoper, Potable water certification, RCRA.

The base pay for this position is $76,000.00 – $152,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
