Job Description

Purpose

The primary role is to function as a licensed pharmacist in charge (PIC), engaged in the practice of pharmacy for Pharmacy Solutions. The PIC is responsible to ensure the daily operations of the pharmacy are in compliant and in accordance with all Federal and State laws and regulations regarding the practice of pharmacy; includes establishing and supervising the recordkeeping system and processes to but utilized for the purchase, sale, delivery, possession, storage, and safekeeping of drugs. Manages and develops effective performance of the team/individuals regarding the practice of pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures compliance with all state and federal Pharmacy laws and regulations are met; Manages and develops effective performance of the team/individuals regarding the practice of pharmacy. Provide oversight for implementing and managing the effectiveness of the quality system by pharmacy licensure (for all necessary Pharmacy employees and across all 50 states and Puerto Rico, Federal and DEA requirements).
  • Oversee policies and procedures that govern employee responsibilities as they relate to the practice of pharmacy, including appropriate in-process/end-process workflows, dispensing procedures, purchasing, inventory management, prescription and signature requirements, pharmacy hours, and patient counseling. Ensure physical and electronic security controls for the pharmacy, drug inventory and pharmacy records.
  • Defines the boundaries of accepted risk tolerance within the department, negotiates with interdepartmental counterparts on projects having potential for significant legal or regulatory implications.
  • Responsible for interacting with the State Board of Pharmacy and serves as liaison to all other state and federal agencies; ensure AbbVie Endocrinology, Inc. remains compliant with all new and existing requirements. Appear and present before state boards as required. Comply with pharmacy audit and inspection requests by both internal and external agencies. Respond to informational or disciplinary issues. Serve as a liaison with AbbVie Legal and Compliance Departments, Policies and Procedures.
  • Plans strategically for overall system of adverse event reporting and regulatory compliance. Collaborates with Pharmacy Operations Lead to define and implement Covered Entity vision, strategy and priorities in order to balance regulatory requirements and business needs. Utilize system processes and methodology dedicated to identifying, classifying and analyzing all medication errors identified with the potential to cause patient harm, including an appropriate escalations process.
  • Ensure standards of patient care by establishing quality improvement efforts to resolve service failures or persistent problems. Partner and align with Compliance Director and Privacy Officer to facilitate/ensure compliance to HIPAA and address potential patient privacy concerns.
  • Collaborate on a regular basis with Pharmacy Operations leader(s) to assure they are aware of pharmacy process and to gain insights to the performance of Pharmacy Solutions in meeting customer requirement. Ensure that Pharmacy Operations meets or exceeds all of its regulatory compliance targets.
  • Work closely with pharmacy leadership team to ensure compliant and efficient processes for delivering, stocking and labeling medicine and other products. Fulfill pharmacists’ duties/responsibilities if needed, including on-call rotations for after-hours patient coverage.
  • Ensures procedures are in place to assess therapeutic appropriateness for each prescription and resolve questionable therapy with patient’s physician. Ensure adverse reactions are managed consistently with the standards established by AbbVie Compliance Department (FDA compliance) and report any adverse events related to the practice of pharmacy as required to states’ Boards of Pharmacy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or PharmD required. MBA or advanced degree desirable.
  • Ability and desire to personally obtain and maintain a current pharmacist license in all states as required.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations and standards affecting Pharmaceutical Products (e.g. CFR 210/211, cGMP).
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a Registered Pharmacist with pharmacy required.
  • Has solid command of out of state mail order and specialty regulations.
  • Possessing a current pharmacist license in all states is a plus.
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of product distribution, inventory management, and reimbursement channels which include third party (commercial), governmental (Medicaid/ Medicare), major medical, and managed care.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills are required.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills are required.
  • Proven experience working in a complex, matrix organization.
  • Pharmacy software design, implementation and modification capabilities are a plus.
