Job Description

About the Role:

Ares Management is seeking an experienced and dynamic leader to join our team for a 1-year maternity cover. Based out of our London office, the Lead will partner with internal stakeholders – including the ESG team, investment teams, and client solutions teams – as well as portfolio companies and investors to add value by implementing our ESG strategy. This role will focus on Responsible Investment (portfolio company-facing) ESG, though has some responsibility for Ares’ Corporate Sustainability (firm-level) initiatives and/ or cross-functional projects.

Coverage work should aim to maintain momentum behind workstreams focused on ESG due diligence & monitoring, sustainability-linked loans/ ESG ratchets, ESG data collection, reporting and client interactions. The role will focus on European Direct Lending some responsibilities to participate in activities across other asset classes and/ or themes such as climate change.

Key Responsibilities:

  • ESG for Investments: Oversee that ESG considerations are effectively addressed within especially Ares’ European Direct Lending funds. This includes providing technical advice on ESG matters to deal teams, contributing to investment committee discussions as needed, working with senior deal team members and ESG champions, develop positions on emerging themes, respond to portfolio incidents, support quarterly monitoring in collaboration with the portfolio monitoring team, regularly update senior management on ESG in the portfolio
  • IR: Partner with investor relations to ensure coverage on ESG components of investor due diligence, client calls, and reporting (with the support of junior staff, ESG champions and other ESG team members)
  • Project Management: Lead and oversee key ESG projects, ensuring timely and successful delivery of data collection, reporting (SFDR, TCFD, CSRD etc), and ESG engagements
  • Portfolio Company Engagement: Work with deal teams to engage portfolio companies on ESG topics for example on ESG ratchets/ SLLs, run events/ training to build portfolio company technical capacity and network
  • Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a team fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with other departments on ESG considerations as relevant across the business, including especially compliance, legal, data, tech
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicate ESG initiatives and progress to internal and external stakeholders for example on team or board meetings, to senior leadership, and to investors etc.

Key Competencies:

  • ESG knowledge: Deep knowledge of ESG topics, reporting frameworks and regulations especially SFDR, TCFD, and relevant European regulations
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead ESG in a fast-paced environment
  • Project Management: Strong skills in managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Collaboration: Strong ability to work collaboratively across teams and departments
  • Problem-Solving: Proactive in identifying issues and implementing solutions
  • Accountable: with a strong sense of ownership and attention to detail

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years in ESG, finance, or a related field, with a focus on private markets.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Environmental Science, Human Rights or any other ESG-related field. A Master’s degree or relevant certification is a plus.
