The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to work with delivery teams supporting major projects in India and the Middle East. We are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world.
You will play a key role in the Rail Systems Team, supporting the technical delivery and performance of rolling stock projects. You will report to the Rolling Stock Engineer and Senior Rolling Stock Engineer, assisting in the coordination of project activities, contributing technical input, and collaborating closely with other disciplines to ensure effective and integrated project delivery.
The successful candidate will be based in our Bangalore office supporting India and global teams (primarily in the Middle East).
Responsibilities would include but are not limited to
Rolling Stock Technical Design & Delivery: Provide technical support in the design, specification, and integration of rolling stock (locomotives, metro cars, EMUs, DMUs, and wagons) for mainline and urban rail projects, contributing throughout project stages from concept to commissioning and handover.
Specification Development: Assist in developing technical specifications, ensuring compliance with Indian and international standards (e.g., RDSO, EN, UIC, BS), and alignment with client and operator requirements.
Rolling Stock Subsystem Technical Expertise: Carry out assessments of rolling stock mechanical and electrical systems, rolling stock traction, including carbody, bogie, brake and pneumatic systems, couplers, doors, HVAC, and related disciplines, with direction from more senior engineers.
Rolling Stock Assurance: Contribute to rolling stock assurance analyses, such as traction performance, stress analysis, crashworthiness, dynamics, gauging, and RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety) requirements.
Design Coordination: Collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams (signalling, track, power, and systems integration) to ensure the seamless interface and integration of rolling stock within the overall railway system.
Quality Assurance: Assist in reviewing and verifying design work completed both locally and remotely to maintain high quality standards, and ensure compliance with Indian Railways, Metro Rail, and international safety and design standards.
On Site Support: Provide assistance in quality assurance at manufacturing sites, focusing on components such as carbody shells and bogie frames.
Collaboration: Work closely with Arup Group offices on projects within the Middle East and India, ensuring compliance with local regulations. Assist with representing Arup’s Rolling Stock services to the clients and stakeholders when required.
Regulatory Compliance: Support liaison with local authorities / approval bodies to secure project approvals and ensure adherence to statutory and regulatory requirements.
Stakeholder Engagement: Assist with liaising with local authorities, RDSO, and statutory bodies to help secure project approvals and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
Health & Safety Compliance: Follow health and safety principles in all work practices in line with Arup and industry policies.
Project Accountability: Contribute to the successful project delivery while maintaining high standards of quality, compliance and efficiency.
Client Presentations: Participate in design workshops, technical reviews, and client meetings, providing technical input and representing Arup’s interests.
Mentorship & Team Development: Support and collaborate with junior engineers to contribute to team knowledge and performance.
Business & Technical Development: Assist senior management with business development activities and technical initiatives to help grow rolling stock capability within India.
Documentation & Reporting: Prepare and contribute to technical design reports, specifications, and rolling stock documentation as required.
Feasibility & Sustainability: Assist in feasibility studies and the preparation of reports on sustainability options for rolling stock and depot facilities.
Innovation & Technology: Support the use of emerging technologies to improve design processes.
If this role right for you?
· Bachelor’s degree (BEng/BSc) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; a master’s degree or specialisation in Railway Engineering is beneficial but not essential.
· Minimum 7 years of post-graduate experience, including minimum 4 years experience working on rolling stock projects in India or internationally.
· Understanding of Indian (RDSO, IRS) and international (EN, UIC, BS, UAE, KSA) standards, as well as familiarity with Indian regulatory and statutory approval procedures.
· Experience supporting clients and stakeholders throughout project delivery.
· Familiarity with rolling stock procurement, requirements management, specification development, and supplier coordination.
· Experience of working in Multi-D environment and with good interface skills.
· Ability to assist in developing and reviewing technical documentation, test reports, and compliance submissions.
· Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
· Overseas Travel: Willingness to travel within India and internationally for project delivery and client engagement.
· Working towards Chartered Engineer status and membership in a relevant professional body.
· Knowledge of depot design, maintenance planning, and asset management systems is desirable.
