Our work includes design and advice to offshore wind farm and solar developers, advice to governments on decarbonisation strategies, managing innovation programmes for low carbon technologies, delivering design solutions for tomorrows low carbon energy system, setting up organisations to deliver, programme and project management and providing sustainable investment advice.

Over the last three years our work with energy clients has grown substantially and this is set to continue. We are therefore looking to recruit across a wide range of skills and experience in all parts of the UK. Our global portfolio of work is grouped into five key client-facing themes: Renewable Energy, Urban Energy, HV Networks, Nuclear, and Hydrogen.

The Role

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Director to lead our Renewable Energy advisory team in the north, with a focus on offshore wind. You will use your network gained from working in the renewables sector to generate new leads and opportunities for Arup. You will bid, win, and deliver renewables and offshore wind consultancy work, collaborating to bring the best of Arup to clients and projects based in the north of England (inc. Teesside), Scotland and Northern Ireland, as a member of the UKIMEA Region Renewables Leadership team.

We have a strong pipeline of confirmed work with national and devolved authorities as well as the private sector and wish to use this as the platform for growth. It is expected that the post holder will contribute to the growth of our Renewable Energy work from a £20m pa turnover business to £40m over the next 3 years.

To take accountability for the leadership of a team in the North, the role will involve:

Prospecting for new work with current and new clients, developing and managing client relationships, and being at the forefront on bids.

  • Being the project director for a portfolio of technical-led advisory services commissions, managing these in compliance with Arup Management System requirements, with accountability for commercial performance and client satisfaction.
  • Taking responsibility for and growing a team / a network of teams, supporting their personal development, providing coaching, addressing performance issues and undertaking / overseeing annual appraisals as well as recruitment to grow the team.
  • Developing the technical excellence of our renewables work such that it delivers innovative services and solutions to clients. This will often involve integrating own team members with experts from other parts of the firm.
  • Raising Arup’s profile through development and communication of innovation and thought leadership via industry events and conferences, especially in Scotland.

Is this role right for you?

  • Proven capability in the successful delivery of technical led renewables and specifically offshore wind consultancy services.
  • Proven track record in winning work for themselves and their team, creating business proposals to pitch to clients, drawing together the relevant technical expertise from across a multi-disciplinary firm.
  • Experience in the new and developing areas of energy consultancy work in the UK.
  • Knowledge of the technical, commercial and delivery challenges on renewable energy projects.
  • Team leadership and line management skills, including recruitment.
  • Strong commercial awareness of a client’s business drivers and public sector commitments to decarbonise.
  • Familiar with reporting to and presenting at board level.
  • Minimum of a degree in a relevant discipline, ideally either management or STEM
  • Professional qualification.

Other

  • Some work outside normal office hours may be necessary.
  • Travel to and from client sites /or temporary assignments to client’s offices may also be required.
  • There will be opportunities for international travel.
