Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Watch this short clip to discover how Arup are shaping a better world and how you could be a part of it!

The Opportunity

Arup’s Advisory business works throughout the entire organisation and asset lifecycle drawing on expertise in strategy and insights, finance and economics, people and organisation, asset and operations and programme and projects. We deliver our advisory services in the context of the built environment by drawing on our deep asset knowledge gained over decades. That means advisory work is customised for the context of our client and their assets.

Currently, we’re looking for someone who is as equally excited about shaping a better world through programmes and projects. Someone who is passionate about and skilled in risk management in a way that provides our clients with certainty and confidence in:

  • Managing their significant (esp. cost, schedule, revenue and reputational) risks in accordance with their own organisation’s risk appetite.

  • Meeting any affordability challenges and their regulatory, industry and/or own compliance requirements.

  • Safeguarding and/ or enhancing their reputation for major project development and delivery.

  • Their developing risk management awareness and capability and the accuracy of risk products for reliable decision-making.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

You will be a risk management practitioner who puts the client at the centre of your efforts. This includes being proactive in building relationships with your client and identifying, not only their programme or project needs, but others that Arup can address through other advisory or engineering disciplines. You will have delivery as well as business development responsibilities.

The post holder will report to the PRM business leader and will carry out the following activities:

Providing PRM advice to internal and external clients in a variety of market sectors at different lifecycle stages, including facilitating risk workshops and applying risk identification techniques. Assessing risk (e.g. CAPEX, OPEX, schedule, revenue and reputation) qualitatively and semi-quantitatively). Quantifying CAPEX & schedule risk exposure using different methods (e.g. Monte Carlo sampling, reference class forecasting) and reporting and advising on risk exposure and risk response plans.

You will also continually review how we could improve our service offering by (a) reviewing how PRM is practised by others, (b) monitoring PRM developments in the marketplace, and (c) acting on lessons we learn when delivering our PRM service, while working closely with internal project teams (especially project managers, technical discipline leaders, planners and quantity surveyors) to recommend and provide PRM support.

What we are looking for:

A professional with interpersonal skills, who is curious about client business and excited to draw on the diversity of Arup’s skills to meet client needs. You will have demonstrable experience in client relationship and business development and a sound understanding of risk management on energy and transport infrastructure projects. In addition, you will:

  • Risk management experience and be familiar with chairing risk workshops, risk quantification using recognised techniques, cost-effective risk response planning and developing and embedding risk assurance and governance frameworks.

  • Have a background of working with different client types (e.g. operators, developers, contractors, investors, central government departments, local authorities).

  • Be able to co-ordinate and influence others within the project environment, including persuading sceptical clients of the value of risk management.

  • Have an awareness of risk management innovations, developing best practice and emerging markets/industry trends.

  • Have a background in professional mentoring and/or coaching junior staff members.
