The Opportunity
We deliver power system studies for renewable generation developers, datacentres, private wire networks and transmission and distribution utilities in the UK and globally. These are often part of a larger multi-disciplinary design commissions. Our highly skilled team carries out grid connection studies for offshore wind (HVAC and HVDC), solar PV, BESS, hydro, green hydrogen, data centres and decarbonised industrial demand. This includes complex dynamic and electromagnetic transient studies in industry standard software.
We also develop and deliver cutting-edge innovation to our clients based on our specialist skillset and Arup’s wider multi-disciplinary engineering and digital expertise, to help drive the energy transition through advanced, resilient and sustainable infrastructure.
Due to growth, we’re looking for Engineers and Senior Engineers experienced in power system studies to join our High Voltage team in Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Bristol or Cardiff.

Is this role right for you?
We are looking for candidates holding a minimum of a MSc, MEng or BEng degrees in Electrical Engineering /Electrical Power Systems or similar. Preferably you will be a Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership with the IET.
The following skills are essential for the delivery of this role:
Expertise in carrying out power system studies including steady state, dynamic and transient studies, at transmission and distribution voltage levels, evaluating system performance and recommending technical solutions where needed.
- Detailed understanding of GB grid code compliance requirements for new connections and demonstrable experience in applying these.
- Extensive working experience in using industry standard software packages such as PowerFactory, PSCAD, PSS/E, IPSA, ETAP, EMTP-ATP and others to build, analyse and verify power system models.
- Experience of performing power quality assessment studies, including Engineering Recommendations G5/5, P28, and P29.
- Engagement with a range of stakeholders including TOs, DNOs, clients /customers, other engineering packages etc.
- The role may sometimes require travel within the UK and occasionally overseas to industrial sites.
For senior engineers:
- Experience in leading technical project teams to deliver packages of power system studies for senior engineers.
- Provision of technical assurance for studies.
- Mentoring and support for the development of early careers engineers.
We are also interested in the following skills:
- Bespoke model development in PowerFactory and other power system software packages.
- Capability in DPL, Python, or other scripting languages.
- Experience of working in a consultancy environment, managing projects and preparing bids.
- Knowledge of grid codes in the EU and in other countries.
- Detailed understanding of GB and international grid connection processes.
- Working knowledge of power system protection settings and co-ordination.
