You will be expected to be the AI and Data Science specialist within the team, focusing on delivering data-driven solutions in collaboration with both internal and external clients.

As a Senior Data Scientist at Arup, you will:
• Be a leader within the team, growing our AI and ML capability and helping to establish a practice that positions the team as a global centre of excellence within Arup.
• Use the latest advancements in LLMs, ML, NLP, and computer vision to solve complex challenges across the built environment in sectors such as transport, water, and energy.
• Apply your experience and innovative thinking to identify opportunities for AI/ML with our clients’ data, work in a data‑lab environment to experiment with different approaches and rapidly prototype solutions, and, where successful, guide these prototypes into robust, deployed applications.
• Have the autonomy to shape the direction of AI within the Data Insights team, identifying high‑value opportunities, designing innovative solutions, and setting the technical standards that guide our work.
• Lead the development of AI/ML best practices, including model governance, MLOps pipelines, and responsible AI approaches, ensuring deployed solutions are robust, transparent, and aligned with Arup’s values.
• Recognize client, end‑user, and wider stakeholder needs and translate them into deliverable, value‑driven solutions.
• Support and guide more junior team members in developing their careers and participate in Arup’s learning agenda
Is this role right for you?
We're looking for someone who is passionate about driving innovation, setting standards, and motivating adoption of best practices across a team of data scientists/analysts/engineers.
You'll also need:
• A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or related fields and 6 or more years of demonstrable experience developing data science and AI solutions.
• Significant experience directing and managing AI solution delivery, with deep expertise in developing LLM, ML, NLP, and other advanced AI models.
• Experience creating AI/ML models, including building deployment pipelines, monitoring model performance, and managing the full model lifecycle in production environments.
• Experience designing experiments, validating model performance, and applying robust evaluation frameworks for AI/ML systems.
• The ability to recognize client, end-user or other stakeholder needs, translate them into realisable data propositions and implement them as effective and valuable deployed applications.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to tell compelling stories and adjust style to suit clients/stakeholders with varied technical knowledge.
• Experience in the following areas would be an advantage: Fabric, Databricks, Azure AI, SQL.
