Our Technical Specialist Services team in Copenhagen is a core driver of Arup's commitment to sustainable development. The team consists of eight highly skilled engineers and architects specializing in in materials, facades, and fire engineering. We are passionate about delivering innovative solutions that maximise safety and minimize environmental impact. As part of our multidisciplinary team, you'll contribute to a diverse portfolio of projects across Scandinavia and internationally, collaborating with experts from various disciplines.

The Opportunity

We are looking for someone who continually leads on technical excellence and can deliver high-quality fire engineering services solutions on time and on budget.

You will work on a diverse range of exciting projects, from developing fire strategies at concept stage through to the handover of landmark buildings. You will be responsible for the overall design, technical delivery, quality and/or management of fire protection systems design of small to large, complex projects, co-ordinating with other design team members and project stakeholders.

As an experienced member of the team, you will impart knowledge and experience to other members of the team to facilitate their growth and development. You will conduct design reviews and assist in the development of junior engineers.

As a Fire Protection / Systems Engineer at Arup, you will:

  • Take a lead design role for fire protection systems: both standalone and multi-disciplinary projects.

  • Demonstrate a level of experience in the design and implementation of:

- Fire suppressing / extinguishing systems,

- Fire detection systems,

- Smoke ventilation & control systems,

- Risk/hazard mitigation.

  • Work with architects and other systems engineers to develop combined system designs which consider aesthetics as well as being technically correct and code compliant.

  • Manage your own projects and provide technical guidance to junior engineers to deliver quality fire protection solutions on time and on budget.

  • Translate Client requirements into an appropriate and clear project delivery approach, making sound decisions and communicating effectively at all levels both internally and externally.

  • Undertake business development activities, supporting in the preparation of bids, being responsible for fee proposals, and establishing a network of clients/colleagues in Arup, and outside Arup.

  • Actively participate in the development and/or implementation of plans for the long-term benefit of the team and wider discipline.

  • Contribute to the ongoing development of a high performing engineering team through knowledge sharing, design reviews and mentoring junior engineers.

Does this role inspire you?

We're looking for someone who is passionate about Fire design. These are the essential skills and qualifications for the position:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical/public health engineering or related fields.

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a consultancy or similar environment.

  • Experience leading your discipline on complex projects.

  • Strong knowledge of appropriate sector-specific legislation, code requirements and design guidance. Demonstrated experience with any of the following key standards, where used for fire protection design: British / European standards, NFPA, Factory Mutual Data Sheets.

  • Capable of undertaking fire protection system design from Concept to Contract issue, including undertaking fire suppression hydraulic calculations.

  • An understanding of construction phase elements.

  • A good understanding of BIM and an enthusiasm for driving digital transformation of the way we work and what we deliver.

  • Understand and manage the scope and relevant programme constraints of projects.

  • Fluency in Danish or other Scandinavian language.

We also value:

  • Enthusiasm for sustainable building design, together with a good understanding of UN SDG’s and their implementation at a project level.

  • Experience in the design and implementation of flammable atmosphere (ATEX) assessment.

  • Experience in the process of developing risk assessments (HAZID, HAZOP) to help ensure projects provide a reasonably safe place to work. An understanding of process control diagrams and chemistry would be useful for forming risk assessments.

  • Experience with using advanced modelling software such as Revit.

  • Other national fire protection design standards.

  • Strong competencies in the typical suite of office software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF read/writing).
