Arup is seeking a Senior Consultant - Resilience and Adaptation to join a multidisciplinary team of engineers, planners, and risk analysts. Our San Francisco and Los Angeles offices are home to a group of experts dedicated to climate resilience: the art and science of making sure our shorelines, transportation networks, and communities can withstand a changing environment. We have a strong track record of winning and delivering exciting projects throughout California and beyond.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection where climate risk and resilience assessment informs adaptation planning and engineering, contributing to projects that improve community safety and resilience to flooding, wildfire, landslides, and other natural hazards. In this role, you will have:

· Real-World Impact: You will work on high-profile projects that protect vital infrastructure, from coastal shorelines to urban transit systems.

· A Global Brain Trust: You’ll collaborate daily with our global team that includes coastal engineers, climate risk and digital analysts, and city planners to tackle challenges like flooding and wildfires.

The Opportunity

This role is ideal for an experienced consultant who can step into project delivery quickly, combining strong project management and client‑facing skills with technical expertise in climate risk, adaptation planning, and transportation systems.

· Project and Task Management: Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams, manage scope, budget and deliverables, and ensure technical excellence throughout.

· Adaptation Concept Design: Contribute to or lead concept design processes for adapting public spaces, infrastructure, and communities to climate risks integrating resilience and environmental metrics beyond traditional planning objectives.

· Client Engagement: Build relationships with clients in the public and private sectors, assist with proposal development, and identify new opportunities to advance Arup’s resilience practice.

· Coastal Resilience and Transportation Systems Thinking: Assess climate‑related risks across urban waterfronts and transportation networks and their interdependencies with environmental, and social systems, translating insights into adaptation strategies that enhance long‑term resilience.

Is this role right for you?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning/Engineering, Urban Planning/Design, Landscape Architecture or similar field, Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in these disciplines is a plus.
  • At least 6 years of experience expected of which at least 4 years were focused in climate risk, applied adaptation planning, transportation, or related fields.
  • At least 2 years of project management experience .
  • A desire and ability to share knowledge and proactively mentor and manage teams and individuals.
  • Software experience: Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign), CAD, Esri Products (ArcGIS) preferred.
  • Professional certifications: Professional Engineering (PE) License in Civil Engineering, Professional Landscape Architect (PLA), American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), or willing to pursue licensure, is preferred.

San Francisco Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in San Francisco is $135,000 to $150,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of San Francisco will differ.
