The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an experienced Airport Planner to join our Infrastructure team in the Milan office. In this role, you will also be part of the Aviation Planning team across the Europe & EIMEA Aviation Planning regions, with a primary focus of leading airport planning opportunities and projects in Italy, while also contributing to regional and global initiatives. Arup’s Aviation Planning team operates globally delivering the planning for major airports across Europe and elsewhere around the world. We are committed to providing robust aviation planning and advice founded on rigorous analysis, thorough knowledge of the aviation industry and technical skills second to none. The role will support project delivery in Italy and abroad and it will support the business development in Italy and elsewhere, directly reporting to the Italian aviation business lead.

As a Senior Airport Planner at Arup, you will:

  • Lead and participate in the development of airport spatial plans, designs, simulation models
  • Undertake Demand/Capacity Analysis
  • Develop airport facility requirements
  • Manage and deliver tasks and projects
  • Be responsible of project management & technical coordination
  • Be responsible of the business development in the field of Airport Planning and Simulation
  • Represent Arup at internal and external meetings with clients
  • Provide assistance in the preparation of airport master plans, program definition documents, planning studies and reports
  • Develop, elaborate and evaluate conceptual planning alternative for major elements of airport infrastructure airfield, passenger terminal, cargo, landside access
  • Develop functional phasing plans.
  • Plan and design aprons and airfield for new and existing airports; including related capacity/demand analysis, master planning, feasibility studies and stakeholder engagement.
  • Work with the Aviation Planning group to augment and refine custom in-house analytical tools and/or develop new planning approaches.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines including Architecture, terminal planning. Fuel, Air Navigation, Airfield ground lighting, buildings engineering, and civil engineering.

Does this role inspire you?

We're looking for someone who is passionate about Project Management for aviation projects; Airfield and apron Planning. We also value:

  • Master's degree level in aviation, planning, engineering or architecture related subject (preferably post-graduate degree)
  • 6-10 years relevant airport planning experience – including airport and terminal facilities requirements and planning, airport master planning, technical due diligence and a desire to build a long term aviation planning and consultancy career
  • Experience in CAD and graphic platforms such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Revit, including experience with 3D modelling. Being able to work independently
  • Experience in airport operations, airspace and navigation aids
  • Good organisational skills and experience of managing tasks, people and projects
  • Strong and proven track record of delivering robust and high quality analytical work
  • Experienced user of Office Microsoft packages, especially good excel and data analysis skills
  • Excellent understanding of ICAO, EASA and IATA standards and recommended practices is required including experience in their interpretation.
  • Experienced user of Microsoft Office package, with strong presentation skills.
  • Verbal and written fluency in English and Italian is essential. Command of one or more other languages, such as Spanish, is highly desirable.
  • Awareness of today’s aviation industry, including planning, design, construction, financing, operation and regulation of airports.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage large scale aviation planning projects to meet project objectives, budgets and schedules

    Desirable (not essential)

  • Master planning and simulation experience
  • Knowledge of other languages
  • GIS knowledge and/or other graphical software
  • Data analytics software, Power BI
  • Experience in airfield /apron layout detail planning using AviPlan.
  • Experience in simulation dynamic modelling (eg CAST, Airtop)

  • Excellent communication/presentational skills
