Job title - Associate Director - Building Services

Location - London

The Opportunity:

We have an opportunity for an outward facing Building Services Associate Director who is chartered, looking for technically challenging work on cutting-edge projects in the Property sector to join our established team in London.

In this role you will lead the Building Services aspects on a portfolio of projects in and around London, embedding thought leadership and innovation into your design response for our clients. You will have overall responsibility for the financial performance of the projects including liaising directly with clients on fees and commercial matters, effectively overseeing total project delivery by enabling effective team management and delegation to ensure the efficient and satisfactory delivery of multiple and complex projects.

As part of your role, you must be a recognised focal point for client contact and business development within Arup and be able to influence strategically. This role will be responsible for a number of strategic aspects in relation to the project portfolio and its delivery; ensuring that the overall interests of the Arup business strategy are met.

Team Context

PSI2 is predominantly London and Cambridge focused in Geography terms. It hosts and manages a significant number of the commercial developer relationships that shape the London market offer in commercial mixed-use projects, media, and emerging markets of science and healthcare. PSI2 is a £31.5m business, with import across several Arup portfolios to deliver our work. 85% of the team income is from multi-disciplinary appointments, relying on exemplary client management and care, translation of value from Arup, and integration to deliver total design successfully for our clients.

Key Responsibilities

Projects:

  • Project Director or Project Manager on Property and mixed-use projects, including masterplans.
  • A client focal point for MEP design (including technical delivery and quality management) and integration of specialists into a project-first offer.
  • Responsible and accountable for financial performance and client relations on projects.
  • Responsible for negotiating contracts with clients and sub-consultants.

Business Development:

  • Responsible for the development and/or implementation of plans for the long-term benefit of the team/group and the firm in line with business strategy; contribute to the development of the team strategy.
  • Responsible for winning work - new and repeat business - and for making tactical commercial decisions affecting projects and business units.
  • Attend sector events and represent Arup.

Team Support:

  • Take lead role in the Building Services discipline, working alongside the other Associate Directors in the group.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, appraisal, performance, development, culture and motivation of specific staff within the team/group.
  • Responsible for predicting and planning future resources.

As a member of the team in a leadership position, you will have strong communication, organisational and negotiating skills and experience in leading successful project teams. You will be a team player capable of imparting knowledge and experience to other members of the team in order to facilitate their growth and development.

You should have strong commercial and client facing skills and be able to represent Arup externally with a proven track record in the delivery of strategic business goals. Generating new business will be central to the role and reference to key client contacts in Property and track record will be welcomed.

Skills and Capabilities

Essential:

  • Degree qualified and a chartered engineer.
  • Experience of leading large-scale and complex projects.
  • Ability to integrate specialists into a value driven total design response.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, working to deadlines and managing priorities.
  • An existing portfolio of developer clients in the Property sector
  • Project Management and commercial skills commensurate with leading major projects.
  • Proven track record of business development and client management.
  • Ability to participate in the strategic development of the group.
  • Ability to take lead role in the preparation and presentation of bids.
  • Experienced in managing team and staff performance, through effective monitoring and coaching.

Desirable:

  • Project experience in the delivery of Science projects alongside Property.
  • Track record of leading industry with thought leadership and challenge.
  • Possess a good working knowledge of current Codes and Regulations in relation to Property.
  • Geographic working and strong internal network.
