The Opportunity

As Arup continues to grow its energy business across Asia Pacific and globally, we are investing in a newly established Secondary Engineering team in Vietnam to support complex high voltage substation projects across the region and beyond. This team is a key part of Arup’s long term growth strategy, providing specialist capability across transmission, distribution and renewable energy infrastructure. Engineers within the team work closely with colleagues across APAC and internationally, contributing to technically complex projects that support the energy transition and the decarbonisation of power networks.

The Senior Primary Engineer – Grade 6 leads and delivers primary design for high voltage AIS and GIS substations up to 500 kV, providing senior technical leadership, design governance and consultancy support across transmission and distribution projects. The role works collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and clients across the APAC region, contributing to the successful delivery of complex, large scale energy infrastructure projects.

About this role

  • Lead and deliver primary layout and physical design of HV AIS and GIS substations up to 500 kV.
  • Prepare, review and technically check primary design deliverables including SLDs, GAs, equipment schedules, BoQs and interface drawings.
  • Perform and review primary design calculations including insulation coordination, clearances, conductor and busbar sizing, grounding and lightning protection.
  • Ensure compliance with IEC, IEEE standards, client technical requirements and internal QA/QC governance.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces with secondary, civil, SCADA, telecommunications and commissioning teams.
  • Support consultancy activities including feasibility studies, FEED, option evaluation, bids and construction-phase technical support.
  • Provide technical mentoring, checking and capability development for junior engineers.

Is this role right for you?

  • Recognised tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or a similar discipline.
  • Minimum 8–10 years’ experience delivering high-voltage substation primary design in a consulting, utility or EPC environment.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and substation design tools such as Bentley Substation / OpenUtilities Substation, with proven experience delivering 66–500 kV AIS and GIS substations.
  • Strong technical leadership and design governance mindset
