The Opportunity
As Arup continues to grow its energy business across Asia Pacific and globally, we are investing in a newly established Secondary Engineering team in Vietnam to support complex high voltage substation projects across the region and beyond. This team forms a key part of Arup’s long term growth strategy, providing specialist capability across transmission, distribution and renewable energy infrastructure. Engineers within the team work closely with colleagues across APAC and internationally, contributing to technically complex projects that support the energy transition and the decarbonisation of power networks.
The Protection Engineer – Grade 5 is responsible for the delivery and technical implementation of protection and control systems for high voltage substations and power infrastructure projects, working within Arup’s multidisciplinary consultancy teams. This role suits an engineer with a strong hands on background in protection, testing and commissioning who is transitioning into engineering design and consultancy focused delivery, with a clear development pathway toward Senior / Grade 6 Protection and Automation roles.
About this role
- Deliver protection and control system designs for HV substations and industrial power systems (typically up to 110 kV and above, project dependent)
- Prepare and develop protection related deliverables
- Apply established protection philosophies and standards
- Apply strong practical knowledge of numerical protection relays
- Support projects involving:
- Protection system testing and validation
- FAT, SAT and commissioning activities (as required)
- SCADA and substation automation interfaces related to protection systems
- Contribute to troubleshooting, fault analysis and resolution for protection and control systems, drawing on commissioning and operational experience
Is this role right for you?
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- 5–8+ years’ experience in protection, commissioning, testing or secondary systems for substations or industrial power systems.
- Strong practical expertise in:
- Protection relays and protection schemes
- Testing, fault analysis and commissioning activities
- Good understanding of:
Protection philosophies and interlocking logic
SCADA and automation interfaces related to protection
- Familiarity with standards such as:
IEC, IEEE (IEC 61850 exposure advantageous)
Experience using protection and engineering tools such as:
DigSI, AcSELerator, PCM600, EnerVista or equivalent
ETAP, AutoCAD or similar engineering tools
- Good written and spoken English.
