The Opportunity
As Arup continues to grow its energy business across Asia Pacific and globally, we are investing in a newly established Secondary Engineering team in Vietnam to support complex high voltage substation projects across the region and beyond. This team is a key part of Arup’s long term growth strategy, providing specialist capability across transmission, distribution and renewable energy infrastructure. Engineers within the team will work closely with colleagues across APAC and internationally, contributing to technically challenging projects that support the energy transition and the decarbonisation of power networks.
The Secondary Engineer – Grade 5 will contribute to the delivery of secondary systems design for high voltage substations and electrical power infrastructure projects as part of Arup’s multidisciplinary consultancy teams. This role is suited to an electrical engineer with solid experience in secondary systems, protection, control and monitoring, who can deliver high quality engineering outputs independently while working under the technical direction of Senior Engineers.
About this role
- Deliver secondary design components for HV substations and related power infrastructure
- Prepare and develop secondary design deliverables
- Apply established engineering standards, client requirements and design philosophies to ensure reliable and coordinated design outcomes
- Support the implementation of protection and control schemes appropriate to project scope
- Contribute to designs involving digital substations and IEC 61850 concepts
- Support selection and application of equipment and systems supplied by major OEMs, under guidance where required
- Work under the technical guidance of Senior / Lead Engineers, incorporating review comments and progressively increasing responsibility.
- Contribute to continuous improvement, knowledge sharing and the development of secondary engineering practices within the team.
Is this role right for you?
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- 5–10 years’ experience in electrical engineering roles involving:
- Secondary systems, control, automation or power infrastructure design
- Sound understanding of:
Secondary systems and electrical control philosophies
- AC/DC power systems and monitoring interfaces
- Working knowledge of:
Relevant IEC and IEEE standards (e.g. IEC 61850 exposure advantageous)
- Proficiency in engineering tools such as:
AutoCAD, MicroStation, EPLAN or similar
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- Good written and spoken English
