Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world,

The Manila Energy Team is strengthening its Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) technical capability to support decarbonization, grid reliability, and power system resilience across the Philippines and the wider Asia‑Pacific region.

The Opportunity

This role is focused on delivering deep engineering input and technical leadership across the full BESS project lifecycle—from feasibility and concept development through detailed design, procurement support, construction, commissioning, and operational readiness.
The role provides hands‑on technical expertise on:
• Stand‑alone utility‑scale Battery Energy Storage Systems
• Hybrid renewable energy systems integrating BESS with solar PV, wind, and grid infrastructure
You will operate as a subject‑matter engineer for BESS, providing rigorous technical input, design assurance, and multidisciplinary coordination, while contributing selectively to opportunity shaping and proposal technical content under the direction of senior commercial and business leaders.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

Competencies:
• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or closely related discipline.
• Progress toward, or eligibility for, professional accreditation with a recognized engineering institution.
• Working knowledge of relevant international and local standards covering BESS, electrical systems, environmental approvals, and occupational health and safety.
• Strong engineering background in battery energy storage systems, power systems, and renewable energy integration.

Tools & Analysis:
• Experience with engineering analysis tools relevant to BESS and power systems (e.g., energy modelling, load flow or equivalent platforms).
• Ability to interrogate OEM models and simulation results critically.

Collaboration & Delivery:
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams across locations.
• Clear documentation of calculations, assumptions, and design decisions.
• Structured approach to problem‑solving and technical risk identification.

BESS Engineering & Technical Delivery
• Undertake and lead technical studies and design tasks for BESS projects including feasibility studies, concept design, basic and detailed design phases.
• Develop and review:
o BESS system architectures (AC / DC‑coupled, grid‑forming vs grid‑following)
o Battery technology selection and degradation modelling
o Energy management and control philosophies
o Performance modelling (energy availability, response times, warranties)
• Provide technical inputs to CAPEX and OPEX assessments, lifecycle cost analysis, and performance guarantee evaluations.
• Review OEM and system integrator technical submissions, specifications, and data sheets for compliance with project requirements.
• Support technical due diligence assignments for lenders, investors, and developers.

Power Systems Integration
• Contribute to grid integration studies including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, and dynamic studies (with support from power systems specialists where required).
• Support interpretation of grid codes, interconnection requirements, and regulatory standards relevant to BESS deployment in the Philippines and regionally.
• Interface BESS designs with civil, structural, geotechnical, and balance‑of‑plant scopes.

Technical Governance & Quality
• Act as a technical checker or reviewer for junior engineers’ outputs.
• Ability to follow Arup’s technical governance, using appropriate reviews and checks to manage technical risk.
• Ensure deliverables comply with relevant international standards, local codes, safety requirements, and Arup Quality Management System processes.

Support to bids & opportunities (technical role)
• Provide technical content and engineering inputs to proposals, expressions of interest, and tenders for BESS‑related opportunities.
• Contribute to technical methodologies, scope definitions, assumptions, exclusions, and risk registers.
• Support technical clarifications with clients, utilities, and regulators during bid and early project stages.
• Assist senior leaders in differentiating Arup’s technical value proposition through robust, credible engineering solutions.

You will be successful if:
• You deliver high quality engineering inputs across the full BESS project lifecycle.
• You make sound technical decisions, clearly communicate risks, and seek review when needed.
• Your work complies with standards, grid codes, safety requirements, and Arup quality processes to deliver reliable BESS outcomes.
• You work effectively with project teams to deliver integrated BESS solutions.
• You provide clear technical inputs to proposals and tenders.
• You support junior engineers through technical guidance and review.
• Over time, you take on BESS assignments with increasing independence and confidence.
