Joining Arup
Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
Our Data & AI team sits at the intersection of technology and the built environment, partnering with engineers, planners and advisors to help clients make better decisions through advanced analytics and AI. We work across a broad range of sectors — from transport and infrastructure to cities and sustainability. Based in Melbourne, our work involves cross-jurisdictional collaboration, influencing Arup's broader strategy and success across the Asia Pacific Region (APAC) and beyond.
The Opportunity
This is a key senior role within Arup's Data & AI team, combining technical delivery leadership, technical expertise, client engagement and business development responsibilities — responsible for leading complex data and AI engagements and supporting the growth and maturity of the team's technical and advisory service offerings.
The role offers the opportunity to work on a highly varied portfolio of projects, with scope for a "choose your own adventure" approach shaped by project demand, client needs, and relationship development across different sectors. It is an opportunity to develop a well-rounded skillset, balancing technical development with consulting capability, leadership, and client engagement experience, positioning the role holder strongly for future leadership roles.
- Leading Data & AI projects end-to-end — including scope definition, delivery approach, timelines, budget management, risk management and quality assurance — selecting and implementing appropriate analytical and technical methods that balance client needs, data availability, budget and time.
- Leading the technical delivery of projects across a range of Data & AI applications, including data engineering, data analytics, natural language processing, predictive modelling, computer vision, generative and agentic AI, and data visualization.
- Building and maintaining trusted relationships with both internal and external clients, acting as a senior point of contact for the Data & AI team — engaging with stakeholders to understand problems, shape appropriate solutions and communicate insights in a clear, practical manner.
- Mentoring and coaching junior data scientists, supporting the development of both technical and consulting skills, and helping to establish, document and uplift team best practices to support the team's development as a center of excellence.
- Leading proposal and bidding activities for Data & AI engagements — including method development, team structuring and fee composition — and supporting the Data & AI Lead in developing team strategy and the positioning of Arup's Data & AI consulting services.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
Is this role right for you?
- Demonstrated experience leading complex consulting or advisory engagements involving data, analytics or AI-enabled solutions, with strong delivery and technical leadership capability — including shaping approaches, asking the right questions, and guiding teams to appropriate solutions.
- Applied experience working with data and analytics solutions, with exposure to techniques such as data engineering, data analytics, natural language processing, predictive modelling, computer vision, generative and agentic AI, and data visualization.
- Proven strength in client and stakeholder engagement, with the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, practical advice and build trusted relationships with senior audiences; and solid experience managing projects including scope, budgets, timelines, risk and quality, with strong commercial awareness.
- Demonstrated capability in leading and developing people — including mentoring, coaching, effective delegation and review of work — with experience supporting or leading proposal and bid development activities.
- Comfortable operating across advisory, leadership and delivery contexts, with the judgement to know when to rely on personal expertise and when to draw on the wider team; and a commitment to continuous learning, collaboration and the responsible and ethical use of data and AI.
