The Opportunity

Arup's Urban Development and Mobility team provides strategic, financial and delivery advice to clients navigating transformative projects at the intersection of urban development, economic growth and transport investment. We help shape and deliver major, complex-built environment projects, from transport-led regeneration and housing growth to large-scale commercial development and infrastructure investment.

Successful urban development requires an understanding of both the tangible aspects of the built environment and the institutional context in which decisions are made. Our advice combines expertise in strategy, economics, policy and the built environment with financial, commercial and technical insight, helping clients turn large-scale ideas into deliverable and genuinely transformational outcomes.

Our team is multi-disciplinary by design and includes strategic economists, urban planners, surveyors, architects, business case practitioners and social value specialists. What connects us is an integrator mindset: we like solving complex problems by bringing together different perspectives and seeing the bigger picture.

The role will involve working on projects within the UK, and internationally, and require a range of quantitative and qualitative skills as well as the ability to effectively support client relationships and work as part of integrated project teams. The type of work will be purposefully varied but might include:

• Making complicated, multi-faceted projects happen in a world with ever-changing challenges (for example – King’s Cross didn’t always look like it does now. Lots of people spent many years making incremental progress which has led to transformation of the place.)
• Building the rationale for major projects, often through Green Book business cases (for example, new train stations – such as the new Northern Line Extension and how it’s connected to the development at Nine Elms and Battersea.)
• Undertaking economic analysis, appraisal and modelling (for example, working out how much economic growth would a scheme to deliver 10,000 new homes and 2.5m sq. ft office space generate?)
• Developing local economic growth and governance strategies (for example, how could public and private sector work together to support a town centre with lots of vacant shops generate increased footfall, activity, and a sense of community?)
• Project strategy and management support (for example, helping clients who are leading complex, long-term development projects make progress on a day-to-day basis often in highly political environments.)
• Candidates are not expected to have experience or technical knowledge of all items listed above. We are an inclusive team who have a range of different backgrounds and professional experience. Is this role right for you?

For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes:

An undergraduate or bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, such as Economics, Geography & Geospatial Science, Urban Planning, or Policy and Politics. With the following skills and attributes:

• Clear interest in working on projects or policy related to the built environment (including urban regeneration, housing, transport, economic policy, or green infrastructure);
• Interest in policy, economics, strategy and/or market analysis;
• Strong storytelling and communications skills including the ability to pull together high-quality visual and written documents, presentations, and outputs that tell a compelling story;
• Ability to think, relay and translate information in an integrated, concise and logically structured manner;
• A good team player with the ability to bring people together around a shared idea;
• Political nous including an interest and awareness of the political landscape and how this impacts policy and investment decisions.

Examples of desirable technical skills and proficiencies include: Business case development; urban planning; transport planning; policy analysis; socio-economic impact analysis; stakeholder engagement; demographic and economic baselining/forecasting; data analysis and visualisation; economic appraisal and cost-benefit analysis; financial modelling; qualitative and quantitative research methods

Examples of desirable softwares include: Microsoft Office suite (Microsoft Copilot; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft PowerPoint; Microsoft Word); Adobe suite (Adobe InDesign; Adobe Illustrator; Adobe Photoshop); ArcGIS Pro and/or QGIS

To be considered for a graduate opportunity, your application must include a copy of your academic transcript and meet the following criteria:

• Full working rights in the country of application
• No more than 12 months of full-time experience in a comparable role
• Recently graduated, or on track to graduate, from your most recent degree, related to your role of choice, before employment starts.
