Senior Civil Engineer - Johor Bahru
Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Joining Arup
Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
Our Malaysia civil engineering team provides consultancy engineering services to clients across the region, while collaboratively supporting the development of less experienced engineers within the group.
Working across medium to large infrastructure projects, our senior engineers bring both technical leadership and a commitment to delivering socially useful work that leaves a lasting impact on the communities we serve.
The Opportunity
You will lead the planning and designing of civil infrastructure projects, demonstrating expertise in civil engineering design — leading investigations, fostering client relationships, and providing insights based on thorough analyses while engaging in multidisciplinary collaboration.
Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, you will ensure integrated project designs meet the highest quality and safety standards, provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers, and stay at the forefront of civil engineering research and emerging technologies — incorporating innovative practices into projects and contributing to the professional growth of the team.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading the planning and oversight of civil engineering projects, conducting site investigations, geotechnical assessments and comprehensive feasibility studies, and taking ownership of designing civil infrastructure — including earthworks, roads, drainage, water reticulation and sewerage.
- Project managing small to medium-sized projects, delegating and managing tasks of junior team members, allocating resources effectively, collaborating with stakeholders to meet project goals, and handling project communication and reporting.
- Monitoring and interpreting applicable laws, regulations and industry standards, and taking the lead in developing compliance strategies and action plans for specific projects, focusing on infrastructure submission to authorities and stakeholders.
- Preparing detailed infrastructure construction plans and specifications, monitoring construction progress, providing technical support, and leading the assessment of pavement conditions and performance — including field inspections, testing and the development of pavement management and rehabilitation strategies.
- Leading design management and strategic planning for projects, collaborating with design teams to define comprehensive project goals and objectives, developing detailed design management plans, schedules and budgets, and monitoring design progress through comprehensive quality assurance to ensure strict alignment with project vision and client requirements.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
Is this role right for you?
- You hold a recognised relevant tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or a similar area, with a minimum of 7 years' relevant experience in civil engineering works within a consulting business environment, delivering medium to large infrastructure projects.
- You have experience in contract administration, construction supervision, stakeholder coordination and project delivery from concept development through to detailed design and implementation — across earthworks, roads, drainage, water reticulation, sewerage and associated civil infrastructure.
- You are proficient in relevant software — including Microsoft Office, Autodesk AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, MiTS, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS and Blue Beam — with the ability to guide junior team members and interpret software outputs, alongside proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and guidelines.
- You communicate clearly and adapt your interpersonal style to connect with diverse stakeholders — fostering open dialogue, collaboration and trusted partnerships by understanding needs and delivering value-added solutions.
- You tackle challenges strategically, identifying root causes and exploring innovative solutions with a critical mindset, contribute constructively in cross-functional teams, and take ownership of your professional development — demonstrating self-awareness and a commitment to continual improvement.
