DESCRIPTION

Bain Capital’s Special Situations group, which has ~$24 billion in assets under management, is one of the most dynamic and complex investment businesses in alternative asset management — operating across distressed debt, opportunistic credit, and special situations strategies spanning North America, Europe, and Asia. This is a rare opportunity to join that business not as a support function, but as an embedded member of the investment and operations team.

As Director of Technology for Special Situations, you will be the senior technologist sitting adjacent to the business — a peer to investment professionals, operations leaders, and finance executives. You will own the technology agenda for the group end-to-end: from shaping the strategic roadmap alongside business leadership, to hands-on delivery, to identifying and deploying AI-driven capabilities that redefine how the team operates. You will manage a dedicated team of developers and a business analyst, and lead a vendor ecosystem — but your most important relationships will be with the business stakeholders you serve daily.

This role is ideal for someone who is as comfortable in a deal pipeline discussion as they are reviewing a system architecture — a technologist who earns credibility through deep domain fluency, not just technical skill.

You are a natural team player who thrives in complex, matrixed global organizations. You build relationships across geographies and functions with ease, navigate competing priorities with good judgment, and consistently drive toward common ground and win-win outcomes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

AI & Innovation

  • Partner with investment professionals and the firm’s data science & AI team to identify, evaluate, and deploy AI-enabled capabilities across the investment lifecycle.

  • Stay at the forefront of rapidly evolving AI tooling — from LLM-based workflow automation to intelligent document processing and portfolio analytics — and bring a grounded, practical perspective on where AI creates genuine leverage.

  • Build expertise in prompt engineering and working with AI APIs and/or AI development tools such as Claude code / Cursor, and champion training and adoption across investment and technology organizations.

  • Drive proof-of-concept work and lead the transition from experimentation to production deployment.

Business Partnership & Strategic Roadmap

  • Serve as the primary technology leader embedded within the Special Situations business, building trusted relationships with investment professionals, portfolio oversight teams, finance, and operations.

  • Serve as the primary liaison between Special Situations business stakeholders and broader Bain Capital Technology, Data, AI, and vendor teams - translating business priorities into technical requirements and delivery plans, while helping business stakeholders understand technology trade-offs, sequencing, and implementation complexity.

  • Partner with business leadership to define, prioritize, and evolve the technology roadmap — translating investment strategy and operational needs into a coherent, forward-looking technology agenda.

  • Proactively assess current systems, workflows, and manual processes; develop and bring forward concrete recommendations for new capabilities, automation, data improvements, AI-enabled workflows, and process redesign - including articulating the problem, options, trade-offs, implementation path, and expected business value.

  • Navigate and resolve priority conflicts across business stakeholders with transparency and sound judgment.

Technology Delivery & Platform Ownership

  • Own the full portfolio of technology platforms supporting Special Situations, including deal pipeline management, fund administration, portfolio oversight and analytics, accounting, and investment reporting.

  • Lead delivery across internal developers, business analysts, and third-party vendors — managing scope, timelines, quality, and stakeholder communication with rigor.

  • Oversee software release cycles, vendor management, and ongoing BAU operations with a high standard for reliability and user experience.

  • Manage the technology budget with fiscal discipline; make sound build-vs-buy decisions aligned to business priorities.

  • Maintain a current-state and forward-looking view of the Special Situations technology ecosystem - including key platforms, integrations, data flows, manual workarounds, control gaps, and vendor dependencies, and use it to identify opportunities to simplify, modernize, and increase operating leverage.

Hands-On Technical Leadership

  • Lead end-to-end rollout of AI & Technology solutions, including requirements gathering, vendor/tool selection, integration design, user acceptance testing, change management, and post-launch support

  • Roll up your sleeves: engage directly in product design, requirements elicitation, technical prototyping, and solution architecture - this is not a purely managerial role.

  • Set the standard for engineering and delivery practices across the team, advocate for best practices in systems analysis, data management, and product governance.

  • Ensure platforms are well-integrated, scalable, and aligned with Bain Capital’s broader technology standards and data infrastructure.

WHAT MAKES YOU AN IDEAL CANDIDATE

You have spent your career at the intersection of technology and investment management — and you are equally at home in both worlds. You understand private markets: the deal lifecycle, fund mechanics, portfolio monitoring, and the operational complexity that comes with a global, multi-strategy business. You have built and delivered technology that investment teams genuinely rely on.

You lead with curiosity and commercial instinct. You see AI beyond the buzzword, and as a practical toolkit — and you have hands-on experience evaluating and deploying AI-enabled solutions in a business context.

You communicate with clarity and confidence at all levels within an organization. You have a bias toward action and are someone who gets things done without overcomplicating matters.

You are a natural team player who thrives in complex, matrixed global organizations. You build relationships across geographies and functions with ease, navigate competing priorities with good judgment, and consistently drive toward common ground and win-win outcomes.

You bring a product-owner mindset and are comfortable moving from business problem to recommendation to delivery. You are not simply an order-taker: you can diagnose ambiguous business problems, develop a point of view, present options and trade-offs, and recommend pragmatic technology or process changes that improve how the business operates.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of experience in technology roles supporting buy-side asset management or alternative investment firms.

  • Exposure to Special Situations, Private Equity, Distressed Credit, or closely adjacent private markets strategies.

  • Deep understanding of the private markets investment lifecycle — deal sourcing and pipeline, credit analysis, portfolio monitoring, fund administration, and investor reporting.

  • Proven track record owning and delivering technology roadmaps in a business-embedded or product leadership capacity.

  • Hands-on technical fluency: SQL, Python, data modeling, and/or BI/reporting platforms; ability to engage substantively in architecture and design discussions.

  • Exceptional communication and relationship skills; able to translate between business and technical teams at all levels of seniority.

  • Experience managing small teams and vendor ecosystems in an agile delivery environment.

  • Hands-on experience deploying AI based solutions in a finance or enterprise context, including tools such as Claude, OpenAI, or similar platforms (preferred)

  • Proficiency in prompt engineering and working with AI APIs or low-code AI development tools (preferred)

  • Demonstrated experience participating in or leading AI solution rollouts, including scoping, stakeholder alignment, change management, and adoption tracking (preferred)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, or a related field; advanced degree a plus.
