Job Description:

The Senior Credit Officer is responsible for leading the credit underwriting process for a portfolio of existing and prospective large corporate client relationships.  Credits in the portfolio are principally underwritten on a cash flow basis with a mix of investment grade and non-investment grade credits.  The position includes leading both new transaction approvals as well as ongoing credit monitoring activities. 

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Primary credit responsibility for a portfolio of Global Corporate Investment Banking (GCIB) Clients in the Power & Utilities sector
  • Structure complex transactions and negotiate credit documentation to mitigate risk appropriately
  • Independently assess new credit asks, balance risk/return and make justifiable recommendations
  • Lead new credit asks, amendments and annual reviews through the internal approval process with Risk partners
  • Develop and apply a deep understanding of the industry and an assigned portfolio of clients
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the large corporate credit product spectrum including syndicated and bilateral loans, M&A bridges, letters of credit, bank guarantees, uncommitted lines of credit, treasury management, trade finance, traded products and international working capital lines
  • Develop a deep understanding of internal Credit Policies & Procedures
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with Corporate Banking, Investment Banking, Risk, Capital Markets, Global Markets and Treasury Management
  • Independently create high quality credit analysis with a focus on business rationale, key risks, sources of repayment, projections and returns & profitability
  • Organize and lead credit due diligence with clients
  • Establish appropriate internal risk ratings for clients and implement accurate risk rating adjustments throughout the life of the loan
  • Manage ongoing portfolio monitoring routines including periodic financial assessment, covenant compliance and amendment activity over life of a loan
  • Participate in team specific and Enterprise Credit wide strategic projects to support business goals, operational excellence, and simplify and improve initiatives
  • Train, mentor and develop Associates and Analysts on the team
  • Drive responsible growth, portfolio asset quality and speed to market 

Required Skills:

  • 10+ years of experience in commercial and / or corporate credit underwriting with a deep understanding of the syndicated loan, trading & treasury products
  • Able to soundly manage the portfolio and justify rationale for recommended transactions
  • BA Degree in Finance or related subject
  • Must have ability to independently manage the most complex transactions, possess strong credit skills and transaction experience, and demonstrate the ability to work with senior leaders, business partners, legal and clients
  • Must be able to independently lead diligence efforts, make approval recommendations, independently negotiate loan documentation and execute timely closings (in both an Agent and Participant capacity)
  • Robust understanding of corporate finance and accounting concepts
  • Requires effective time management and ability to manage multiple priorities
