Join us as an AVP Data Engineer at Barclays where you will spearhead the evolution of our infrastructure and deployment pipelines, driving innovation and operational excellence. You will harness cutting-edge technology to build and manage robust, scalable and secure infrastructure, ensuring seamless delivery of our digital solutions. The Hands-on Engineer is a core developer responsible for building and maintaining real-time data ingestion and transformation services. This role requires strong Java development skills and the ability to work with streaming technologies (Kafka Streams, Spring Kafka, and Apache Flink) to process high-volume financial messages. Engineers will implement parsing logic, transformation rules, and ensure robust, production-ready code delivery.
To be successful as an AVP Data Engineer , you should have experience with:
Strong proficiency in Java (11/17/21) with solid understanding of core concepts and modern features.
Hands-on experience with Spring Boot and Spring Framework.
Working knowledge of Apache Kafka: producers, consumers, and basic streaming concepts.
Experience with Kafka Streams or Spring Kafka for stream processing.
Working knowledge of Apache Flink DataStream API and basic Flink job development.
Familiarity with AVRO serialization and Schema Registry.
Experience with XML parsing libraries (JAXB, Jackson XML, StAX) and JSON processing.
Strong unit testing skills using JUnit 5 and Mockito.
Good understanding of data structures and algorithms.
Experience with Git and collaborative development workflows.
Some other highly valued skills may include:
Understanding of SWIFT messaging formats (ISO 20022 or MT messages).
Experience with IBM MQ or JMS-based messaging.
Knowledge of payment processing domain.
Familiarity with ELK stack for logging and troubleshooting.
Experience with SWIFT parsing libraries (Prowide Core).

Purpose of the role
To build and maintain the systems that collect, store, process, and analyse data, such as data pipelines, data warehouses and data lakes to ensure that all data is accurate, accessible, and secure.
Accountabilities
- Build and maintenance of data architectures pipelines that enable the transfer and processing of durable, complete and consistent data.
- Design and implementation of data warehoused and data lakes that manage the appropriate data volumes and velocity and adhere to the required security measures.
- Development of processing and analysis algorithms fit for the intended data complexity and volumes.
- Collaboration with data scientist to build and deploy machine learning models.
