Join us as an Equities Synthetics Software Engineer at Barclays, where you’ll be responsible for developing, enhancing, releasing, and supporting innovative software solutions to support the Equities Synthetics Trading Platforms. You will collaborate with other teams, including Trading, Operations, Support and Product Management, to implement robust systems and manage trading platform. You will also provide support to the business, as part of a 2nd line support, for the solutions the team develop. Your expertise in software engineering and financial markets will play a key role in optimising our equity synthetics trading platform, driving both performance and scalability.
To be successful as an Equities Synthetics Software Engineer, you should have:
- Proficiency with Core Java (8 and above), Spring, Sprint Boot, Spring Cloud Stream, MicroServices architecture, Advanced SQL capabilities, JPA/JQL, real-time messaging (Solace, MQ, Kafka) , Unix/Linux skills, and software development best practices; including OO design, collections, multithreading, automated testing, and code reviews.
- Some knowledge of working with financial market products; equity derivatives preferred but not essential.
- Demonstrated ownership and accountability in a team environment, including direct collaboration with other IT/business teams and second-line support as part of a cross-team support rota.
Some other highly valued skills may include:
- Communication skills and leadership qualities to coordinate with diverse and regional teams.
- Experience working on trading platforms and high performant systems.
- Experience working in a global team using Agile methodologies with a focus on continuous improvement; including relevant code/work management tools (e.g., Git/Gitlab, Jira and Confluence).

Purpose of the role
To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.
Accountabilities
- Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
- Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
- Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
- Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
- Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
- Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
