Join us as a Barclays Internal Audit AVP – Operational Risk. In this role, you will provide independent and objective assurance over the Bank’s Operational Risk second line of defence (2LoD), focusing on how the 2LoD sets the Operational Risk Management Framework, performs effective review and challenge of the first line of defence (1LoD), and ensures adherence to regulatory requirements and internal standards.
You will contribute to audit planning and execution, including assessing governance and oversight, the quality of risk and control assessments and reporting, and the effectiveness of issue identification, escalation, and remediation tracking. You’ll deliver and communicate clear, evidence-based observations and agree practical, actionable recommendations with stakeholders.
To be successful as a Barclays Internal Audit AVP – Operational Risk, you should have:
- Internal audit (or equivalent assurance) experience in a mid-to-large organisation, with exposure to Operational Risk 2LoD activities (e.g., framework/standards, oversight governance, review and challenge)
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to assess whether 2LoD oversight and challenge is effective, evidence-based, and appropriately documented
- Knowledge of the regulatory environment and supervisory expectations relevant to Operational Risk, and how these translate into 2LoD policies, standards, risk appetite, oversight activities, and reporting
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with experience engaging and influencing stakeholders across 1LoD and 2LoD, including drafting concise audit reports and presenting conclusions to governance forums
Some other highly valued skills:
- Experience auditing or working within Operational Risk 2LoD coverage areas (e.g., ORMF/policy governance, RCSA oversight, operational resilience, third-party/outsourcing oversight, incident and issue management, risk events and escalation)
- Relevant professional qualifications (e.g., ACA/ACCA/CPA, CIA, CISA) or equivalent experience
- Data analytics capability to support audit testing and insight (e.g., SQL, Python, visualisation tools)

This role will be based in London.
Purpose of the role
To support the development of audits aligned to the bank’s standards and objectives by working collaboratively with colleagues, providing accurate information and recommendations, and complying with policies and procedures.
Accountabilities
- Audit development and delivery support, including financial statements, accounting practices, operational processes, IT systems and risk management.
- Identification of operational risks to support the delivery of the Barclays Internal Audit (BIA) Audit Plan through risk assessments.
- Assessment of internal control effectiveness and their capability to identify and mitigate risk aligned to regulatory requirements.
- Communication of key findings and recommendations to stakeholders, including the Audit Owner, senior managers and directors.
- Identification of regulatory news and industry trends/developments to provide timely insight and recommendations for best practice.
