Our team is searching for a Seed Science Operations (SSO) Agronomist, located in the Great Plains Region of Kansas (Western Kansas), that will specialize in conducting canola field trials that support various Breeding and Trait Development programs.
This agronomist will ensure that all field trials and analysis are conducted efficiently, while adhering to strict protocols set forth by Breeding and Trait Development project customers. The primary focus will be to establish, maintain, and evaluate field trials for the purpose of delivering high quality data, in support of product advancement.
As a Seed Science Operations Agronomist, you create chemistry by...
- Managing small plot field trials from seeding to harvest, including activities such as trialing location identification, seedbed preparation, seeding, scouting, in-crop pesticide applications, pest (insect and disease) identification & monitoring, phenotypic data collection throughout the season, harvesting, and data reporting.
- Helping manage resources within the assigned location, with the goal of ensuring effective and efficient operations for all assigned Breeding and Trait Development programs. This includes equipment maintenance, inventory management, seasonal staff hiring & supervision, as well as participating in budget planning for the region.
- Adhering to stewardship, regulatory, quality, and safety compliance guidelines, policies, and procedures. This includes documentation, record keeping, data management, trial management, periodic trainings, audits, etc…
- Participating in the local EHS program to ensure all activities are being performed safely and responsibly. This will include helping with training of new employees and contributing to the safety culture within the team.
- Participating in regional planning and results meetings to establish alignment of protocols & resources, and to ensure trialing results are properly communicated and interpreted.
- Developing collaborative relationships with internal and external partners. These may include, but are not limited to, Breeding & Trait Development Managers, SSO Agronomists, Regulatory, Stewardship, Strategic Marketing, Crop Protection, Analytical Services, area growers, universities, various equipment service providers, etc…
If you have...
- BS in agriculture or related discipline with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience or High School Diploma with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience. Master’s degree in agriculture or related disciplines an asset.
- Relevant experience in crop yield trialing, high throughput phenotyping, crop modeling, crop management and/or experimental designs.
- Experience with canola agronomy.
- Experience in conducting research trials using statistical design and analysis, canola botany, plant breeding, genetics, pollen flow, and genetic purity, are all assets.
- Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting tractors, sprayers, planters, plot combines, and other related small plot equipment.
- Experience loading, unloading, and trailering equipment an asset.
- Demonstrate problem solving skills and the ability to be flexible within dynamic situations, to ensure minimal impact on data and production.
- Ability to travel up to 10%, domestically and internationally.
