BASF/Chemetall, is the Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division, operating under the Chemetall brand, and a leading supplier of applied surface treatments worldwide. At BASF/Chemetall, we develop and manufacture tailor-made technology and system solutions for applied surface technology. Our products protect metals from corrosion, facilitate forming and treatment, prepare parts optimally for the painting process and ensure excellent coating adhesion. The chemical treatment of metal surfaces is BASF/Chemetall core competence. The focus of our worldwide activities is on the development and implementation of customized technology and system solutions for surface treatment.
We are looking for a Environmental, Health, and Safety Specialist to join our EHS team in New Providence, NJ.
The EHS Specialist will be accountable to support the EHS programs at the New Providence, NJ facility and will report to the sites EHS Manager.
The basis of the BASF EHS initiative includes the preparation of Hazardous Incident Risk Assessments (HIRA), Standard Operating Procedures and Training. The accountabilities include, but are not limited to, hazardous incident identification and management, EHS training, audits and inspections, SOP preparation, hazard communication, MOC, work permits, PPE evaluation, emergency response, process safety and environmental protection. Be responsible for supporting the site EHS Manager in the following activities:
Responsible Care Initiatives
Organizational Activities
• Support the site manager in maintaining site action tracking.
• Manage contractor pre-qualification and time on site.
• Assist with document control for EHS and the site.
• Regularly check compliance with the site’s legal permits.
• Support incident management and incident investigation activities.
Occupational Safety Activities
• Perform hazard identification and risk assessments.
• Review, maintain, and actively participate in the Safe Work Permit system.
Environmental Activities
• Waste management
If you have...
• Bachelor’s Degree - Safety, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science or a related technical degree or equivalent education and experience.
• 1-3 years of experience working in EHS. (i.e. GHS, OSHA, RCRA, SARA 312 & 313, 40 CFR)
• CIH, CSP, CHMM, OSHA Certified desirable but not required.
• Demonstrated knowledge and application of the Responsible Care principles and ISO 14001.
• Ability to work with minimal level of guidance & supervision and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
• First Aid and CPR trained.
• Ability to independently learn and understand technical, regulatory and external issues regarding Safety, Health and Environment.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to build effective working relationships.
• Effective decision-making abilities.
• Ability to communicate and interact with all levels of management.
• Ability to utilize common workplace and database software. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP, etc.)
• Ability to work at the highest levels of integrity.
• Ability to travel - 10%

Pay transparency
BASF is committed to pay transparency practices. The competitive Pay Range for this role is $65,000-$75,000. Actual pay will be determined based on education, certifications, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
