BASF/Chemetall, is the Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division, operating under the Chemetall brand, and a leading supplier of applied surface treatments worldwide. At BASF/Chemetall, we develop and manufacture tailor-made technology and system solutions for applied surface technology. Our products protect metals from corrosion, facilitate forming and treatment, prepare parts optimally for the painting process and ensure excellent coating adhesion. Our technologies and products are used in a variety of industries and end markets such as automotive, aerospace, aluminum finishing and metal forming.

The chemical treatment of metal surfaces is BASF/Chemetall core competence. The focus of our worldwide activities is on the development and implementation of customized technology and system solutions for surface treatment

We are looking for a Technical Service Specialist - Automotive OEM to work onsite in Spartanburg, SC.

The site representative leads and coordinates all technical, purchasing, inventory, projects and reporting activities for their site. They also respond to customer needs and complaints.

As a Technical Service Specialist - Automotive OEM (ECT-Chemetall), you create chemistry by...

• Completion of all work with a commitment & focus on following all aspects of the guiding principles of BASF Responsible Care
• Collect and manage on site inventories daily to ensure timely ordering of products to avoid negatively impacting production.
• This will include walking the pretreatment line, checking any bulk storage areas and any other areas where the plant might store Chemetall materials (i.e. body shop, customer stores, second/third level of paint shop)
• Perform daily visual checks of units coming through pretreat system to ensure quality.
• Tracking of body defects and performing trials while units are traversing the system to accurately identify and resolve the issue(s)
• Collects data and issues designated reports (i.e., Daily, weekly, monthly)
• Daily data collection – Titrations and Inventory Management and Control
• Weekly data collection:
-Processing panels through PT system for both visual inspection and lab submission.
-Collecting bath samples for analysis and lab submission.
-Work within the SAP system as needed.
-Use HCL Notes system to submit samples for testing.
• Coordination of test (samples, projects) work being done for the plant and participating and monitoring system cleanup during times of non-production.
• Coordination of PT process changes/modifications – initiate, provide written plan, etc.
• Ensure performance of the chemicals by recommending and implementing actions to improve productivity, increase effectiveness, and reduce costs.
• Responds to customer requests regarding products, projects, information, and other inquiries.
• Review process performance with the customer and operators to improve efficiency, increase effectiveness, and reduce cost.
• Develops, trains, monitors, and motivates operators, while playing a key role in meeting all chemical treatment program goals.
• Develop and grow a relationship with as many contacts in the plant as possible to assist with future opportunities or needs.
• Identify new business opportunities within responsible customer site. This should include all areas of the plant.

If you have...

  • Bachelors Degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or business adminstration is preferred.
  • 2-5 years of professional experience in a simial technical role is preferred.
  • Technical expertise regarding surface treatment chemicals, automotive paints and coatings products, and understanding of specifications and processes is preferred.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Analytical expertise for testing and technical evaluations.
  • Ability to build and strengthen relationships with customers technical team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent time management, attention to detail, and strong organization skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% is required.
