At Cepheid, we are passionate about improving health care through fast, accurate diagnostic testing. Our mission drives us, every moment of every day, as we develop scalable, groundbreaking solutions to solve the world’s most complex health challenges. Our associates are involved in every stage of molecular diagnostics, from ideation to development and delivery of testing advancements that improve patient outcomes across a range of settings. As a member of our team, you can make an immediate, measurable impact on a global scale, within an environment that fosters career growth and development.

Cepheid is proud to work alongside a community of six fellow Danaher Diagnostics companies. Together, we’re working at the pace of change on diagnostic tools that address the world’s biggest health challenges, driven by knowing that behind every test there is a patient waiting.

Learn about the Danaher Business System which makes everything possible.

The Staff Reliability Engineer is responsible working with product development and sustaining teams to ensure Cepheid is developing highly reliable products through the application of Danaher reliability tools (e.g. Failure Mode, Effects & Criticality Analysis, structured problem solving, reliability modeling, reliability predictions, etc.). This technical role will be responsible to support assessment and improvement in final product reliability. The ideal candidate will be working closely with the mechanical and electrical design, software, firmware, and manufacturing engineers to characterize and demonstrate design improvements through testing and simulations. Primary function of this position is to make/review/improve/execute current plans for systems/subsystems reliability testing. This includes design, procurement and automate the systems / subsystems throughout the reliability tests. Other important task is to support current efforts by the design team for bench testing critical components and subsystems.

This position is part of the Systems Engineering team and will be located onsite in our Sunnyvale, California location. At Cepheid, our vision is to be the leading provider of seamlessly connected diagnostic solutions.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Define and implement functional and reliability requirements of systems/subsystems to plan reliability/life tests that help evaluate the short/ long term compliance with the specifications. Provide reliability predictions, along with test plans and methods to assess and drive product reliability to the desired levels. Develop & present methods of correlating reliability test results with actual field performance
  • Interact and work closely with ME, EE, SW, FW, IT, PM engineering groups and suppliers ensuring the desired reliability is achieved using Design for Reliability (DfR) approaches including FMEA and DoE approaches
  • Works with R&D, Manufacturing, Customer Care, and Quality groups to help resolve customer complaints/manufacturing issues during early commercial stages by performing reliability prediction of failure mechanisms on products under development and products in the field
  • Own the product and engineering design reviews, assessing the reliability budget of products/designs and inspire changes which improve product reliability
  • Able to articulate needed design changes to improve product reliability and influence and align with cross functional stakeholders on those recommendations

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Electrical, Mechanical, Biomedical preferred) with 8+ years of experience OR Master’s degree(Electrical, Mechanical, Biomedical preferred) with 6+ years with related work experience in reliability/life testing of medical capital/consumer equipment and instruments or other related engineering fields.
  • Designs, validates, executes, and documents test methods and protocols that are directly relevant to reliability testing (HALT, HASS, Accelerated Life-testing) and help mitigate risks in product designs
  • Hands on with statistical tools such as JMP, Minitab, DOE++, Reliasoft Weibull++, ALTA, BlockSim and experience in programming (Python, Matlab) and data acquisition tools and techniques, for measuring electrical and physical phenomenon such as temperature, voltage, current, torque, force, pressure, or sounds
  • Experience working with cross-functional design teams and manufacturing through product development cycle
  • Expert knowledge of reliability engineering tools including Accelerated reliability models for electrical and Mechanical failures and statistical methods

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Demonstrated leadership in reliability improvements, influencing the design, process, software, firmware engineering from early design.
  • Must have strong integration analytical and troubleshooting skills to understand system interfaces and be able to quickly analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve system interoperability problems
  • Ability to use FEA software (Eg. Ansys Sherlock) for product life prediction in creation of reliability tests.
  • Medical device industry experience or equivalent experience in a regulated industry
