The Vice President of Conjugation & Innovation Leader is responsible for leading the Abcam conjugation R&D growth program including, taking overall responsibility for the delivery of the RUO Flow Reagent GCV, a Danaher Transformational Danaher Innovation Program (TDIP).

They will drive and co-ordinate teams working on conjugation capabilities and flow cytometry at Abcam, and together with Beckman Coulter Life Sciences (BECLS) will create a portfolio of products to serve the research use only flow cytometry market. The role offers the opportunity to work on a global, multi-opco, multi-site Danaher TDIP project, with activities at Abcam’s Cambridge, UK and Hangzhou, China sites together with frequent interactions with BECLS teams in Miami, US and Bangalore, India.

This position reports to Senior Vice President - Research & Development and will be on-site at Abcam’s Global HQ in Cambridge, UK.

This position combines strategic leadership with hands-on innovation to shape Abcam’s future in flow cytometry and conjugation.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

Lead RUO Flow Reagent GCV

  • Lead end-to-end program success and own critical decision making by delivering differentiated customer value that achieves revenue growth targets, while maintaining a balanced focus on quality, on-time delivery, and product cost targets. Make tough calls and ensure critical decisions are brought to the appropriate governing bodies.
  • Shape the future with strategic vision and entrepreneurialism by anticipating trends, crafting long-term strategy, and driving value creation. Balance bold thinking with process discipline to ensure sustainable impact.
  • Elevate risk management capabilities by pressure-testing team approaches, enabling broader and more systematic thinking, and cultivating a culture where teams challenge assumptions, anticipate failure modes, and engage in structured risk exploration.
  • Lead with purpose, through developing future Innovation Leaders, staying grounded under pressure and leading through DBS Kaizen and Culture
  • Business Leader for Conjugation Virtual Business Unit at Abcam, driving growth and operational excellence across Abcam’s portfolio of Conjugates (for Flow cytometry & other applications).

Lead the conjugation strategy and teams

  • Aligned to the GCV Program and broader Abcam strategy, execute on a comprehensive conjugation strategy that expands Abcam R&D investment into the space and drives innovation. Drive process improvements in conjugation and flow cytometry using Danaher’s DBS toolkit. Manage timelines and resolve issues in collaboration with project managers and BECLS, ensuring transparent communication and smooth execution.
  • Lead the Conjugates team to deliver conjugates for RUO Flow Reagent GCV, partnerships and custom conjugation projects on time and within budget. And resolve technical challenges and ensure high-quality product delivery.
  • Working with other members of the R&D SLT, provide scientific and technical leadership to drive the development of Abcam’s new products, leading projects and opportunities to optimize our processes in speed, output and quality, designing and implementing industry-leading approaches. As well as supporting the SVP of R&D with improving operations and culture change through embracing DBS.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • A Ph.D., or equivalent in a life sciences discipline
  • Extensive experience (7+yrs) in flow cytometry or conjugation
  • Multiple years (5+yrs) of experience managing people and leading a team
  • A deep knowledge of flow cytometry, antibodies, dyes and conjugation techniques, including the current state of the art.
  • Ability to distil complex scientific problems and communicate effectively to both scientific and non-scientific stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in matrix settings, both within the organization and with external partners.
  • Track record of delivering challenging technical projects on-time and on-budget.

Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements: if applicable for role

  • Up to 50% travel – visiting other sites and conference/trade shows

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Leading complex global projects
  • Experience in leading cross-functional teams in a global matrix environment
