Job Description Summary

The Digital Engineering Manager is an essential part of BD’s Digital Engineering (DE) team and contributes to advancing the world of health for BD’s innovative portfolio of products and services.
They will operationally report to the DE Director and serve as a subject matter expert in physics-based numerical and analytical simulation studies, technology sensing, and the development and application of advanced structural mechanics and multi-physics capabilities.
The Digital Engineering Manager will act as a strategic advisor to associates at all BD levels to maximize business contributions and impact BD’s product development. Additionally, they should technically lead the implementation and usage of DE analyses to drive innovation and deliver high-quality and robust products to market faster.

Job Description

  • Educational Background

Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Advanced engineering degrees preferred, but not required.

  • Professional Experience

Minimum of 10 years of in-depth experience in structural mechanics and multi-physics analyses for complex engineering applications, including nonlinear solid mechanics, implicit and explicit simulations, and advanced constitutive material models.Minimum of 7 years of industry experience using analysis simulation tools effectively to impact product development with noted business impact, preferably within the medical product industry.

  • Job Responsibilities
  • Strategically deploys advanced structural mechanics simulations to impact the company. Utilizes advanced structural mechanics expertise to technically deploy and guide the application of computer-aided engineering for complex technology and product applications. Participates directly on high-priority projects and initiatives to provide strategic direction on key decisions, especially those involving high-risk and high-reward BD implications. Identifies opportunities to drive innovation, ensure quality and robustness, reduce cost and decrease time to market.
  • Develops and implements innovative new simulation capabilities for complex structural mechanics applications. Acts as an advisor to management to explore advanced technical research studies and contribute to developing innovative new capabilities and concepts. Interacts closely with key BD stakeholders and external partners to identify unmet needs and prioritize efforts to maximize value. Coordinates efforts to implement novel discoveries with a tangible and specified value to multiple businesses and functions. Ensures that new capabilities are developed appropriately and are validated based on available empirical information or other methods.
  • Provides technical leadership in structural mechanics and multi-physics analyses to best meet overall BD needs. Acts as a structural mechanics technical leader within the DE team responsible for applying the appropriate technologies to meet goals and best utilize time, resources, and available funds. Technically directs efforts of internal and external resources based on business needs. Plays a key role in advising BD functional leaders and cross-business project teams in developing operating plans and ensuring the successful execution of identified projects that will benefit from technologies.
  • Represents BD as an industry leader and recognized expert in the field of advanced structural mechanics applications. Serves as an organizational spokesperson on advanced Digital Engineering projects responsible for maintaining a high-level and in-depth structural mechanics analysis expertise. Represents BD at external technical and professional meetings as an industry leader. Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge through training courses, seminars, and industry conferences. Acts as key Interface with external partners, especially regarding structural mechanics and multi-physics, to drive future enhancements important to BD.
  • Promotes the value of Digital Engineering technologies to the BD community and increases awareness throughout the organization. Responsible for organizing forums for information sharing about DE technologies, promoting knowledge sharing across BD, and organizing ongoing visits with key BD stakeholders.
  • Develops and maintains an environment for constructive inter-relationships among DE team members, business units, and various cross-functional disciplines.
  • Knowledge and Skills
  • Subject matter expert in the field of advanced structural mechanics and demonstrated technical depth in applying these tools for novel applications and in developing new capabilities. In-depth knowledge of ABAQUS and ANSYS software with experience providing technical guidance and oversight to direct reports. Familiarity with scripting, simulation-based optimization, and other multi-physics simulation capabilities is highly desired.
  • Proven ability to interact with both technical and managerial personnel at various levels throughout the corporation. Thorough knowledge of tools necessary to support requested Digital Engineering work.
  • Project Leadership: Minimum of 2 years of experience in leading others in a direct supervisory and/or facilitation role. Effective project management skills and proven ability to coordinate and facilitate work through others to accomplish challenging objectives with noted business impact.

  • Influencing Others: Ability to present business cases, strategies and execution plans to senior corporate leaders and gain timely buy-in. Intuitively and quickly assess people and situations and act accordingly. Excellent communication, interpersonal and persuasion skills.
  • Dealing with Ambiguity: Ability to use independent reasoning and judgment to establish work priorities and be flexible in responding to constantly changing priorities and shifting deadlines in a fast-paced working environment. Comfortable with ambiguity.
