Senior Software Engineer - Terminal Backend Runtime
Bloomberg
The Bloomberg Terminal offers clients real-time access to data, analytics, news and communication, and is the company’s biggest product. Our team is responsible for the Terminal backend. Our products route, load balance, and execute backend applications and maintain workload management algorithms and policies. At peak, we support over 5 million concurrent application executions and process over 500 million requests per day. Our team also develops new features, migrates to contemporary implementations, and supports long-term product objectives.
What’s in it for you:
The work includes architecture and design, problem solving, and low level technology (think tuning Linux kernel parameters). We do feature work, systems programming and build distributed systems. You’ll have the opportunity to review others’ work, to mentor, to own components of the infrastructure and to come up with creative solutions to drive those components forward. You’ll also have opportunities to learn; we invest in our people, for example, by sending them to industry conferences to learn about things that can help the team deliver more.
Our team:
Our team is a collection of highly curious and collaborative engineers. We come from diverse backgrounds, and we have a range of tenures at Bloomberg. We sometimes think very differently about things, and we value that. We trust and respect each other. We enjoy working on impactful, technically challenging projects, and appreciate opportunities to do things with other teams in the group and across the company.
Our technology stack is mostly C++ with a sampling of other languages, including Python, Go, JavaScript and TypeScript. Every few months, we gather input from stakeholders and plan out what we’ll work on next.
We’ll trust you to:
- Design and implement high-reliability, low-latency production systems supporting the Bloomberg Terminal runtime infrastructure
- Dive in and solve problems, measurably improving the stability and performance
- Develop code and tests with a focus on correctness, performance and reliability
- Collaborate broadly to successfully deliver company-wide objectives, learning new skills as needed
- Stay up to date with industry trends, driving modernization safely and efficiently
You’ll need to have:
- 4+ years working with an OO language (C++, Java, Python or other) in production environments
- Experience with systems programming and/or distributed systems
- Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, similar field of study or equivalent work experience
We’d love to see:
- Desire to work on a high visibility, high impact product and infrastructure
- Prior experience with building high reliability infrastructure, leveraging logging and metrics to ensure performance
