In this role, you will lead a team of system safety and reliability engineers across a portfolio of Blue Origin programs, serving multiple customers. Your team is responsible for establishing plans, quantifying resource needs and performing system safety and reliability analyses to identifying hazards and mitigations, and provide a detailed safety case for mission operations. This team works at the intersection of program management, design engineering, coordinated supply chain, and quality organizations. As a system safety & reliability manager, you must enjoy solving communication and organizational problems, earning trust, and improving the overall performance of all teams involved. You will be responsible for the employee lifecycle including performance management, career development, and training. You will also need to be an expert in reliability analyses and lead a team that is focused on improving the reliability of our manufacturing outputs.

This role is part of the Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance team. This team is focused on monitoring and assessing processes that guide Blue Origin’s design, manufacturing, and operations, ensuring system safety engineering, environmental health, and safety, product integrity, and continuous improvement processes.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will partner with leaders from Blue’s programs and functional groups and lead your team to develop improvements to system safety and reliability processes and tools. We are developing a team culture where system safety and reliability engineering are deeply integrated into the design and development processes, because we believe that this integration done early and well leads to better outcomes and fewer program delays during development. We are seeking a self-motivated and highly organized individual who can work with minimal direction and coordinate teams in the successful execution of system safety activities.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the Reliability and System Safety teams in supporting programs and functional groups, including staffing, budget, performance, skills, etc.
  • Serve as internal Reliability expert, guiding our approach.
  • Provide safety and reliability expertise and program support for economical and effective execution of safety and reliability processes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and effective working relationships that improve team performance, deliver results, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Experience managing and developing employees at all levels of experience.
  • Experience in design, development, integration, or testing – preferably with aerospace hardware or sophisticated technical systems.
  • Experience performing various reliability and system safety analyses with expert level proficiency such as: Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of configuration management principles and practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • B.S./B.A. degree in engineering or a relevant technical field.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience implementing hazard mitigations into product definition artifacts (e.g. drawings).
  • Experience leading large, complex system safety efforts.
  • Technical expertise with launch vehicles, spacecraft, and test facilities.
  • Experience developing reliability models of spacecraft, launch site and/or launch vehicle systems.
  • Experience with reliability/life test design (failure modes discovery, life demonstration, and screening), Weibull analysis and parameter estimation, stress-strength interference analyses, probability distribution estimation, reliability growth modeling, and probabilistic risk analysis.
  • Experience implementing, customizing or improving system safety policy and procedure for a development engineering environment and transitioning products to operation and production.
  • Deep understanding of principles and practices for systems and reliability engineering.
  • Experience with systems engineering tools such as DOORS, DNG, Sapphire, or similar.
  • Experience working in a safety-critical environment.
  • Ability to work independently on rapid development programs.
  • Experience assessing compliance to regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with the STPA safety process.
  • Basic project management skills.

Compensation range for on-site WA applicants is $167,088-$233,923

Other site ranges may differ
