Federal Sector Director – Job Description

The purpose of this position will be to grow our business with the US Federal Government, with the primary focus of enhancing our client understanding, work winning, and project delivery. Within the Federal sector, the initial focus will on the Bureau of Overseas Building Operations (OBO) and the General Services Administration (GSA), however, this position will also help identify what other federal agencies we should be targeting and working for. This role will support our operations and finance teams as they ensure compliance with our federal government work.  With both a technical and management background, the candidate will ideally have a Federal sector background and will strategically develop existing and new client relationships while growing a team over time.

  • A commitment to increasing our understanding of the federal government and building strong client relationships
  • Success in work winning, and the ability to work with our teams to bring new services and solutions to the federal sector
  • Collaboration across various teams to deliver exceptional projects with strong commercial performance

Strategy and Business Development

The strategic and business development accountabilities of this role are defined as:

  • Maintaining an accurate picture of current and future Federal sector trends in order to establish the work focus for the Federal sector team
  • Championing and delivering broader scopes of work for our Federal clients – including both design and advisory services – through a thorough understanding of Buro Happold’s services and capabilities
  • Client account management – developing and implementing a plan to build stronger relationships across the sector, with an initial focus on OBO and GSA
  • Identifying and prioritizing other Federal agencies to build relationships
  • Winning work in the Federal sector – actively identifying and converting leads to projects within the framework of the key client strategy (OBO, GSA, other)
  • Reviewing financial and technical submissions/proposals; attending interviews

Project Management

  • Project Director for appropriate federal projects, taking ownership for sustained and productive client relationships
  • Directing multiple projects across the group; taking responsibility for the Federal sector solutions while ensuring financial success
  • Delivering a risk managed portfolio; working within agreed capital lock up parameters

People and Operations Leadership

  • Mentoring leadership and staff to build stronger relationships and deliver projects as required in the Federal sector so that meaningful delegation can apply within the team
  • Support the Operations team in better understanding how to deliver projects for the federal government and what operations and compliance improvements might be needed

Essential Experience

  • Strong track record of business development in the Federal sector
  • Proven track record working with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent communicator and storyteller (verbal, written, listening); should be confident and competent at presenting with presence and impact
  • Demonstrable leadership experience

Desirable Skills

  • Recognized in the industry for personal contribution to the Federal sector
  • Experience of working in a global matrix organization
  • Experience leading teams
  • Overseas work experience desirable but not essential 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor and/or Master’s degree
  • 15+ years of relevant experience

  • Salary range of $155,500 to $243,600 This will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience
