Institutional Credit Management (ICM) is a first line of defense function (1LOD) that houses and consistently manages credit risk activities performed for Citi’s institutional clients. Within ICM, the Credit Underwriting
function provides credit analysis, underwriting, and first line of defense credit approval for periodic / material transaction reviews, and the subsequent credit monitoring across all institutional business including Banking, Services, and Markets relationships.
We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the ICM team as an Underwriter (UW) Manager. The individual manages a team of UW analysts as well as covers large and complex relationships within an industry and is responsible for all underwriting activities within their portfolio, in partnership with Banking and Risk. This role reports to the CRH Underwriting Head.
Key Responsibilities:
Execute, aligned with global and regional strategies, all responsibilities regarding underwriting, including, but not limited to:
- Lead execution of credit approvals, prepares and leads discussions with Risk and escalation within 1LOD; underwriting and monitoring of a portfolio of corporate clients, from early origination discussions to the development of credit approval memos and senior approval forums
- Undertake comprehensive review of financial analysis, due diligence, projection modeling, stress testing, risk ratings and other in-depth analysis performed by junior resources (UW analysts)
- Provide Underwriting sign-off and recommendation for transactions requiring senior approval
- Has industry expertise and ability to discuss relevant macro and micro issues within coverage portfolio
- Partner with Front Office on structuring new transactions and negotiating legal documentation
- Build strong working relationships with key partners in Banking, Risk and with key regulators, audit/control functions
- Lead credit conversation with both internal and external auditors (BICR, IA, IBQA, SNC, OCC, etc) related to coverage
- Manage around 10 direct reports, tracks workload and helps to find staffing solutions to bottlenecks and urgent deliverables in cooperation with Underwriters
- Lead the recruiting process for Officers, AVP, and Vice Presidents roles
- Manage HR related topics (i.e. PTO, sick time, etc); complete mid-year and year-end Performance Reviews
- Responsible for the onboarding and training of new joiners and for individual analyst skill development and progression
- Cultivate and guide analysts, fostering team strengths and address developmental areas
- Timely completion of all mandatory compliance / analytical trainings
Key Competencies:
- Independently monitoring a portfolio of clients including (i) overseeing the timely and accurate production of credit approval memos and transactions and (ii) ability to clearly articulate recommendation to risk on credit reviews in both written and verbal communication
- Proven ability to understand nuances of local markets, local regulation, and the capabilities and practices of competitors
- Build and maintain a network of internal resources and subject matter experts (across product, legal, operations, risk, and other relevant stakeholders) as needed. Navigate organizational complexity and breaks silos
- Provide well-reasoned, balanced assessments of risk/return trade-offs associated with transactions and client relationships
- Proven track record of partnering with global peers in leveraging and implementation of best practices
- Solid organizational and time management abilities. Willingness to work under pressure and manage time and priorities effectively with little to no supervision.
Qualifications/Knowledge/Experience:
- Minimum 10 years in credit-related roles within Banking, Credit Risk Management, or a comparable field, with previous managerial experience.
- Strong understanding of capital markets products and complex financing and product structures
- Ability to see the ‘big picture’ in a complex environment
- Can make decisions under pressure and short timeline
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills. Active listening skills
- Excellent presentation skills – adept at presenting effectively to audiences of various sizes and various constituencies
- Proficient knowledge of product documentation and ability to negotiate terms
- Proficient in modeling techniques with a deep understanding of modeling principles
- Advanced Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) skills
- Bachelor’s/University degree or higher degree in Business (MBA), or CFA, or any other related subject
