Job Summary:
Senior-level banker position in Citi’s Technology & Communications team responsible for managing and growing a portfolio of key Japanese corporate clients within the Technology and Communications sectors. The role requires a deep understanding of the technology, media and telco sectors, strong client relationship management skills, robust credit acumen, and the ability to originate, structure, and execute complex financial solutions on a global scale.

In this role, you’re expected to:
- Client Relationship Management:
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of large Japanese corporate clients in the Technology and Communications sectors.
- Develop and maintain deep, strategic relationships with senior client executives (CFOs, Treasurers) to understand their business strategies, financial needs, and challenges.
- Act as a trusted advisor, providing insights into market trends, industry developments, and financial solutions.
- Business Development & Origination:
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the existing client base and target prospects, focusing on deepening wallet share and cross-selling Citi's comprehensive product suite.
- Lead origination efforts for corporate banking products including, but not limited to, lending (term loans, revolving credit facilities), trade finance, global cash management, and foreign exchange.
- Work collaboratively with product partners (e.g., Investment Banking, Markets, Treasury and Trade Solutions) to deliver holistic solutions within the boundaries allowed by banking compliance.
- Credit Analysis:
- Lead the preparation and presentation of credit proposals, ensuring sound risk assessment and adherence to Citi's credit policies and procedures.
- Manage ongoing credit monitoring and annual reviews for the assigned client portfolio.
- Execution & Transaction Management:
- Oversee the structuring, negotiation, and execution of complex financial transactions from origination to closing.
- Coordinate internal teams (legal, risk, in-business risk, operations, product specialists) to ensure seamless and efficient deal execution.
- Industry Expertise:
- Maintain an expert-level understanding of the Japanese Technology and Communications landscape, including key players, emerging trends, regulatory environment, and competitive dynamics.
- Provide sector-specific insights to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Team Leadership & Collaboration:
- Mentor and guide junior bankers (VPs, Associates, Analysts) within the team.
- Foster a collaborative environment with internal product partners and across different regions/countries within Citi's global network.
- Compliance & Risk Management:
- Ensure full compliance with all internal policies, procedures, and external regulatory requirements (e.g., AML, KYC, sanctions).
- Proactively identify and mitigate operational, reputational, and compliance risks.
As a successful candidate, you’d ideally have the following skills and exposure:
- Education: Bachelor's degree required; MBA or other advanced degree in Finance, Economics, or related field preferred.
- Experience: 15+ years of experience in corporate banking, investment banking, or a related financial services role, with a significant focus on coverage of Japanese corporates, ideally within the Technology and Communications sectors.
- Language Skills: Fluent in both Japanese (native or business-level proficiency with kanji literacy) and English (business-level written and spoken).
- Credit Skills: Strong credit assessment skills with a proven track record of managing corporate credit portfolios.
- Financial Acumen: Deep understanding of corporate finance, accounting, financial modeling, and capital markets products.
- Industry Knowledge: Solid understanding of the Technology and Communications sectors, including key industry drivers, business models, and financial metrics.
Skills & Competencies:
- Client Focus: Exceptional relationship management skills with a client-centric approach.
- Demonstrates strong balanced risk judgement. Candidate will be expected to begin preparations for selection into the Citi Senior Credit Officer elevation process upon coming into the role.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and negotiation skills. Ability to articulate complex financial concepts clearly and concisely.
- Analytical Thinking: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to identify strategic opportunities and develop tailored financial solutions.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead transactions and internal teams, and mentor junior staff.
- Execution Orientation: Results-oriented with a strong ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver under pressure.
- Collaboration: Highly collaborative and able to work effectively across different teams, functions, and geographies.
- Integrity: Unquestionable integrity and ethical standards.
- Japan Securities Dealers Association (JSDA) Class 1 and 2 certifications.
