The Opportunity
This Trading Assistant position sits within Citi's Client Financing trading desk in Mumbai. The role is designed to provide critical support to the trading team, focusing on data analysis, process automation, and operational efficiency. The Trading Assistant will be responsible for a variety of non-regulated tasks that are essential to the daily operation of the desk, including P&L reconciliation, position monitoring, and the development of analytical tools. This position operates at the intersection of trading and technology, offering a unique opportunity for a candidate with a strong quantitative and technical background to gain deep insights into the mechanics of a global prime brokerage business. This is a hands-on role with significant learning opportunities and direct exposure to the trading floor environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the trading desk with daily Profit and Loss (P&L) production, reconciliation, and attribution analysis.
- Monitor and report on trading positions, inventory levels, and other key book-level metrics.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance analytical tools, reports, and dashboards using Python, SQL, and data visualisation platforms to improve desk efficiency and support decision-making.
- Collaborate with Technology, Risk, Middle Office, and Operations teams to investigate and resolve breaks or discrepancies in trading data and workflows.
- Contribute to the automation of manual processes and reporting to improve accuracy, timeliness, and scalability.
- Prepare ad-hoc data analysis and presentations for traders and senior management to support business strategy and risk management.
Qualifications:
- Relevant Experience: Typically, more than eight years of experience in a trade support, middle office, product control, or quantitative analyst role at an investment bank, hedge fund, or comparable financial institution. Direct exposure to equities, equity derivatives, or prime brokerage is highly desirable.
- Technical Skills: Strong programming skills in Python (including data analysis libraries such as Pandas and NumPy) and SQL are essential. Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) is advantageous.
- Product Knowledge: A solid understanding of equity derivative products and their mechanics, particularly synthetic instruments such as equity swaps and total return swaps. Familiarity with the concepts of P&L, risk, and collateral management is expected.
- Analytical Skills: Strong quantitative and analytical skills with the ability to work accurately with large datasets, identify patterns, and solve problems in a logical and structured manner. A high degree of attention to detail is critical.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present analytical findings and report on operational issues clearly and concisely to various stakeholders.
- Education: A bachelor's or master's degree in a quantitative discipline such as Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering from a recognized institution.
