Key Responsibilities:

Owns problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems or services with technical complexity and ambiguity increasing as experience is gained in the role. Provides independent execution of established work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes. Involves minimal direct management of people, but could involve the coordination and direction of work amongst technicians and/or interns. Contributes effectively toward team goals, exhibits influence within a work group and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.

  • Identify exhaust aftertreatment 1D simulation modelling needs in collaboration with aftertreatment functional and system integration teams.

  • Plan and prioritize aftertreatment 1D simulation model development efforts to meet identified needs

  • Develop and evaluate 1D engine exhaust aftertreatment simulation models and tools

  • Collaborate with major catalyst suppliers on functional simulation model development and implementation.

  • Deploy modeling technologies to support Analysis-Led Design (ALD) in 1D aftertreatment emission solutions.

  • Train and support internal users on Cummins’ 1D aftertreatment modeling tools.

  • Apply simulation software and tools (e.g., AVL-Cruise M, MATLAB/SIMULINK, Python) to support project goals.

  • Participate in engineering processes such as Pre Program Planning (PPP), Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), and Engineering Standard Work (ESW).

  • Engage with internal stakeholders and support decisions with data-driven insights.

  • Own problem resolution for moderately complex engineering problems with increasing scope and responsibility over time.

  • Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing within the team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Competencies:

Accelerated Aging Testing and Analysis of Chemical Systems - Designs and constructs laboratory equipment to simulate various aging exposures relevant to practical applications of active chemical components, including thermal cycling, chemical poisoning, and physical masking.

Characterization of Chemical Systems - Designs and conducts tests of physicochemical properties, for example morphology, acid-base and redox properties, diffusion characteristics, impedance behaviors, solubility, and chemical poisoning, in order to aid in diagnostics and prediction of performance and health of chemically active components.

Chemical or Electrochemical Performance Testing - Designs tests measuring chemical transformation of species, selectivity, electric yield, response to chemical and physical environments in order to determine performance, durability, or state of health of chemically or electrochemically active components; examines and interprets test data using analysis methods to draw conclusions that influence hardware and controls design decisions and to provide information for computational tools development.

Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis - Impacts product design decisions through the utilization and/or interpretation of computational tools and methods that predict the capability of a product's function relative to its system, sub-system and/or component level requirements.

Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.

Product Verification and Validation Management - Develops product systems validation plans from a variety of inputs to identify failure modes, while managing product risk and relative priority; negotiates product requirements against capability to guide project scope; evaluates analytical, simulation and physical test results to verify product capability and validate requirements; assesses legacy versus proposed system solution capabilities and produces recommendations with technical documentation to support product decisions.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area. Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred

QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering or related field with 0 - 6 years of relevant professional work experience.

The role is simulation focused with the following key responsibilities

Additional Key Responsibilities :

  • Identify 1D engine exhaust aftertreatment modeling needs via input from and interaction with aftertreatment functional and system integration leaders.

  • Prioritize and plan work efforts to develop and evaluate 1D aftertreatment models and modeling tools to fill identified needs.

  • Interact/ partner with all major catalyst suppliers for functional model development and delivery.

  • Implement modeling technologies that directly impact Analysis-Led Design (ALD) for emission solution development programs.

  • Train and support users of Cummins’ aftertreatment models and tools.

  • Strong analytical ability in chemical reaction kinetics, catalysis, gas dynamics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics, demonstrated by applying these fundamentals to solve real-life engineering problems.

  • Interest in computer programming and/or computer modeling.

  • Engine exhaust aftertreatment knowledge.

  • Capability to efficiently apply one or more engineering simulation software and programming languages, including AVL-Cruise M, AVL-FIRE, MATLAB/SIMULINK, and Python, is desirable.
