DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Controls Engineering Technician to join our team specializing in Manufacturing for our Cummins Inc. facility in Ladson, SC.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience to the extent such experience meets applicable regulations.

  • Requires significant relevant work experience or specialized skills obtained through education, training, or on-the-job experience.

Position Summary:

The Controls Engineering Technician at CTP plays a critical role in supporting the development, implementation, and maintenance of automation and control systems across manufacturing operations, works closely with Controls Engineers, Maintenance, and Manufacturing Engineering teams to ensure equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and drive continuous improvement. This role requires a strong technical foundation, ownership mindset, and a proactive approach to learning and problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities:

Automation System Design & Integration

  • Support Controls Engineers in delivering control engineering solutions for line expansions, upfits, and VPI projects.

  • Assist in standardizing controls technology and programming approaches to reduce spare part complexity and improve troubleshooting efficiency.

  • Contribute to PLC/HMI programming, system integration, and commissioning activities.

Troubleshooting & Downtime Reduction

  • Respond to unplanned downtime with urgency, using structured diagnostic tools and guides.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to improve cycle times, reduce waste, and enhance equipment availability.

  • Document fault conditions and resolutions to build a site-specific knowledge base.

  • Provide end-of-shift reports detailing downtime incidents and resolutions.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure controls systems comply with ISO 13849, ANSI/RIA R15.06, NFPA79, and site-specific safety standards.

  • Adhere to LOTO, Arc Flash, and other safety protocols.

  • Integrate safety into controls architecture and participate in audits and inspections.

Documentation & Support

  • Maintain accurate and accessible documentation for all systems, including electrical schematics, PLC code, and troubleshooting guides.

  • Create new documentation for emerging issues to support future resolution and training.

Training & Development

  • Support cross-functional technical training for ME and Maintenance teams.

  • Drive personal learning to close skill gaps and contribute to the creation of onboarding and skills matrices.

  • Mentor junior technicians when required and assist in succession planning efforts.

Change Management & Project Discipline

  • Log all system changes and updates with traceability.

  • Ensure electrical drawings are updated and accessible in control cabinets and shared locations.

Communication & Team Visibility

  • Update live project trackers and participate in weekly reviews to delegate and support new actions.

  • Communicate effectively with peers, shift leads, and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and minimize downtime.

Time Management & Scheduling

  • Use shared vacation trackers to ensure adequate coverage.

  • Adhere to scheduled shift times, provide weekend support when required

  • Utilize inactive periods for learning, documentation, and guide creation.

Ownership & Accountability

  • Take ownership of assigned tasks and ensure completion with positive intent.

  • Escalate downtime incidents promptly and follow defined escalation paths.

  • Demonstrate urgency and leadership in resolving issues and driving improvements.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience within CTP technical function.

  • Strong foundation in PLC/HMI systems (Rockwell Studio 5000, Siemens, etc.).

  • Familiarity with vision systems, robotics, and industrial networking.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.

  • Demonstrated ownership, drive, and willingness to learn independently.

  • Safety certifications (LOTO, Arc Flash, etc.) and compliance awareness.
