DESCRIPTION
ON-SITE ROLE
The Machinist – Level I role is part of a formal skilled trades apprenticeship or training program. Under direct supervision, the incumbent assists site Machinist skilled trades in learning and developing foundational tool room and machining skills within a manufacturing environment. The role requires successful completion of specified classroom training and a defined number of on-the-job training hours, while learning and adhering to safe work protocols related to electricity, industrial equipment, and other energy sources.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)
Stop work immediately and report any major injury hazards or unsafe conditions.
Report all work-related injuries, illnesses, incidents, hazards, and near misses.
Comply with Cummins HSE standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
Promote an interdependent safety culture by looking out for one another.
Correct hazards within individual control and capability.
Identify environmental impacts of work activities and take actions to minimize negative effects.
Participate in required HSE training and safety improvement activities.
Quality
Learn and apply high standards of workmanship and craftsmanship.
Perform supervised work in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and technical specifications.
Use tools, measuring devices, and testing instruments accurately.
Support equipment uptime and assist with downtime and failure analysis.
Provide feedback and inputs to the Preventive Maintenance system.
Follow all process documentation and quality procedures.
Conduct quality inspections and raise issues to minimize cost and quality risks.
Delivery & Operations
Attend required classes to build essential tool room and machining knowledge.
Complete all required on-the-job training hours within defined timelines.
Assist with repair and maintenance of manufacturing equipment within assigned capabilities.
Support preventive, corrective, emergency, and predictive maintenance activities.
Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work area, including routine housekeeping and machine cleaning.
Identify and help reduce manufacturing constraints.
Participate in problem-solving, process improvement, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Teamwork & Development

Complete training and personal development activities aligned with business requirements.
Actively participate in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) teams to improve safety, quality, processes, material flow, and employee development.

Qualifications
High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education, or equivalent experience meeting applicable regulatory requirements.
Ability to comply with Cummins policies, procedures, and safety standards.
This position may require licensing or authorization to comply with export control or sanctions regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Skills and Experience
External Candidates
Minimal or no prior work experience required.
Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in machining and manufacturing.
Ability to understand and follow technical instructions, drawings, and standard work procedures.
Strong teamwork, communication, and shop-floor discipline.
Internal Candidates
3–4 years of relevant machining or manufacturing experience.
Demonstrated proficiency in:
CNC machine operation and setup (VMC, HMC, Turning Centers)
CNC program editing (Fanuc, Siemens, Mazak as applicable)
Tool selection, offsets, and wear compensation
Robot operation and programming (Fanuc and KUKA)
Honing machine operation and setup changes
Process monitoring and in-process inspection
Engineering drawing interpretation (GD&T)
Fixture handling and job changeover
Basic preventive maintenance
Cutting parameters (feed, speed, depth of cut)
Cycle time and productivity improvement
Quality tools (5S, Kaizen, Root Cause Analysis)
Safety compliance and shop-floor discipline
