RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
Education
Must be at least 16 years of age at the time of hiring
Current Enrollment: You must be a current student in high school or in a college/university interested in pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or a related field.
Able to work up to 19 hours per week during the academic year
QUALIFICATIONS
The AMEL School‑to‑Work employee will support laboratory operations within the Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) and Tribology functions of the Advanced Materials Evaluation Lab. This role provides hands‑on exposure to engineering laboratory workflows, advanced inspection technologies, data handling, and safe laboratory practices. The position is designed for high school or college students (age 16+ per STW guidelines) who are exploring careers in engineering, materials science, or technical laboratory work.
Key Responsibilities Laboratory Support (Primary Responsibilities)
Assist with sample preparation: labeling, staging, and logistics for X‑ray, ultrasonic, eddy current, Tribology, and other test methods.
Support basic lab work activities , such as organizing fixtures, preparing parts, setting up workstations, and reviewing standard operating materials.
Upload and organize work order data , images, and supporting documents into AMEL's work order systems (e.g., Tribology/NDE Lab – Work Orders).
Maintain clean and safe work areas.
Assist engineers with routine equipment checks and lab standardization tasks (training material organization, documentation updates, label creation, equipment maintenance etc.).
Administrative Support
Lead work order priority justification by communicating with customers, add justification into the work order and help manage the priority with responsible operators, engineers and lab leaders.
Lead parts logistics, manage parts inventory and update parts receival in to work order database.
Facilitate outsourcing work including parts shipment, send RFQ, manage POs etc.
Technical Learning & Exposure
Under supervision and within STW legal restrictions (no hazardous operations for 16–17‑year‑olds), STW employees may observe or assist with:
X‑ray radiography workflows (2D, 3D, live X‑ray)
Ultrasonic testing (A‑scan, C‑scan), eddy current testing
Tribology testings and Surface quality inspections by Zygo
Data post‑processing and basic interpretation steps led by engineers
Training material creation and AMEL standardization efforts
Technical/Soft Skill Expectations:
Interest in engineering (e.g. mechanical), materials science, or laboratory technology
Strong organization, attention to detail, and willingness to learn
Ability to follow written procedures and verbal instructions
Good communication habits and reliability
Availability from 12 - 3 or 1 - 4 pm preferred

Due to the operational nature and specific job duties of this role, work is required to be completed 100% in person/On-site.
