The Senior Counsel’s main role is to ensure the bank works in compliance with the law and regulations to mitigate legal risks and is advisor to the business and infrastructure. Legal risk manager with responsibility for dealing with issues proactively and taking the necessary legal actions to protect the organization and its employees.

Advising the business and infrastructure departments, draft and negotiate contracts, responsible for engaging and coordinating external counsel where appropriate and provide the business with standard and tailor made documentation and legal advice in general. The Deutsche Bank business is providing (investment) banking and asset management products and solutions to large cap, midcap, SME and high networth individuals.

The Senior Counsel reports directly to the Country Head of Legal.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees all matters of legal and regulatory, corporate governance significance, compliance and reputation to Deutsche Bank and provide legal and strategic advice directly to dedicated business and infrastructure areas.
  • The majority of the work includes, but is not limited, to international and local commercial banking transactions, financial and corporate law matters, asset acquisitions, regulatory compliance, strategic partnerships, intellectual property matters, privacy, marketing and advertising law matters.
  • Engage in highly complex legal analysis and problem solving by identifying legal issues, synthesizing multiple legal requirements, applying analysis to facts presented, and presenting legal and business recommendations that enable Deutsche Bank to achieve its objectives while mitigating and/or eliminating legal risk (including monetary damages, criminal penalties and regulatory sanctions).
  • Manage highly complex and valuable (with material financial and strategic impact on Deutsche Bank Nederland and Deutsche Bank Group) problem files.
  • Engage and manage outside counsel for dedicated matters including litigation and regulatory proceedings.
  • Keep abreast of industry, legislative and regulatory initiatives that may impact Deutsche Bank.

Skills

  • Balance of excellent legal skills and substantive experience, particularly experience in the Dutch and international commercial banking sector and strong managerial skills.
  • Dutch law degree, a minimum of 10 years relevant experience in the (international) financial services industry or a law firm.
  • Ability to handle a diverse range of issues and responsibilities in an accomplished and professional manner.
  • Strong abilities on conceptual and innovative thinking.
  • Ability to go beyond the legal environment and advise on general business matters
  • In depth experience with general and financial industry litigation.
  • In depth knowledge of financial industry products such as derivatives, trade and commodity finance, cash-management, corporate finance, structured and project finance, lending, asset management.
