Role Description

  • Operational Risk Management (ORM) is looking for a dynamic individual to join our New Business Office (NBO) risk management team.
  • The New Business Office (NBO) is a 2LoD function in Operational Risk Management (ORM) that was set-up to be responsible for the cross-risk review and oversight of New Product Approvals (NPA), Transformation Risk Assessments (TRA), Change Governance Framework, and Initiatives. The NBO is the primary point of contact for Market Facing Functions and NPA Due Diligence Reviewers participating in these processes.
  • Operating within the broader NBO, the NBO Team is a run-the-bank team involved in the day-to-day review and oversight of NPAs, including performing materiality assessment for NPAs, signing-off as the NPA 2LoD Final Reviewer for in-scope NPAs and participating in post approval review processes under this Policy.
  • They are the primary point of contact for Market Facing Functions and NPA Due Diligence Reviewers alike participating in the processes covered under this Policy. This role is undertaken separately for DWS by a dedicated equivalent team.
  • This is a key role within the Bank, and the successful candidate will be a critical member of the UK NBO team. The candidate will predominantly be exposed to senior stakeholders in the UK with the Investment Bank as the main business division partner; however, the role will also interact heavily with First Line of Defense (1LoD) and Second Line of Defense (2LoD) stakeholders that span all regions and all businesses in the Bank.
  • They will be responsible for supporting the daily run-the-bank processes of the UK NPA portfolio, owning several key functions or business areas, supporting the delivery of IT change projects and framework projects and presenting to senior management and oversight committees, working closely with a varied and global DB network. This role would be an excellent opportunity for any experienced Risk Manager and in particular someone with governance experience, products knowledge and analytical skills who is keen to develop an in-depth understanding of how to apply these to the risk management of new products in a global financial institution.

Your key responsibilities

  • Run-the-Bank
    • Reporting to the Head of New Business Office for Europe, IB, PB and Future State Implementation, the VP will work with the team to ensure the NPA process and the Product lifecycle framework are robust, well understood and adhered to by the business and infrastructure functions
    • Provide subject matter expertise input into risk-based decisions and discussions over the risk management and governance of new business proposals, including deciding whether an NPA is needed
    • Managing a pipeline of new product approval reviews, including the management and escalation of issues within the approval processes for NPAs in the UK region.
    • Facilitate and coordinate with 1LoD and 2LoD partners throughout the approval processes, helping to make the process efficient while maintaining a robust governance process and challenging or escalating where necessary
    • Prepare and coordinate the Europe New Product Forum meetings including agenda, materials, documentation and issue tracking and resolution
    • Engagement where necessary with internal and external auditors and regulators.
  • Team management
    • Responsible for the management of a team of NBO risk managers (c.3-5)

Key attributes:

  • University degree in Sciences, Finance, Business, Accounting or Economics preferred
  • A critical thinker with strong, active listening skills with the ability to ask questions, when necessary, in order to understand the business proposal or issues at hand
  • Strong oral and written skills – should be able to distil topics into understandable summaries with clear conclusions and explanations of rationale. Including report writing. Be able to draft high quality reports.
  • Presentation skills – candidates should be confident in presenting the outcomes of their work, often to senior management, typically in power point format
  • Adaptable – candidates will play a pivotal role in a period of significant change for this function and therefore experience with change projects is desirable
  • Assertive – must be proactive in forming relationships with key stakeholders in the business and within ORM, but also be comfortable challenging senior business contacts
  • A team player and a self-starter with the ability to work collaboratively both locally and globally
  • Some knowledge or understanding of Operational Risk Management principles and practices with relevant experience gained in a Tier 1 Investment bank is desirable, but not compulsory

Your skills and experience

Core Competencies:

  • 5-10 years of experience in a similar role within financial services
  • Comprehensive understanding of financial products offered by a Tier 1 Investment Bank
  • Strong understanding of front-to-back infrastructure and controls in a Tier 1 Investment Bank
  • Experience working with senior stakeholders within a high-pressured, fast-paced, and dynamic environment
  • Attention to detail, ability to retain information received from various sources and perform a read-across
  • Time management skills – ability to deal with multiple urgent priorities and should therefore be highly organised and be able to multi-task and switch between tasks on demand
  • Ability to proactively work across a diverse group of stakeholders within a complex organization, often to solutionise, and be able to develop strong working relationships with a broad range of functions
