Location: Pune, India

Role Description

An Engineer is responsible for designing, developing and delivering significant components of engineering solutions to accomplish business goals. Key responsibilities of this role include active participation in the design of their solution components, investigating re-use, ensuring that solutions are fit for purpose and maintainable, and can be integrated successfully into the overall solution and environment with clear, robust and well tested deployments.

Your key responsibilities

  • Work as part of a delivery team collaborating with others to understand requirements, analyse and refine stories, design solutions, implement/test them and support them in production
  • Drive and support the prioritization of User Stories and Backlog definition, in order to streamline execution of program priorities while aligning the product with the underlying architecture
  • Write code and write it well. Be proud to call yourself a programmer. You closely collaborate with users, analysts, developers and testers. Use test driven development, write clean code and refactor constantly.
  • Define and evolve the architecture of the components you are working on. Contribute to architectural decisions at a department and bank-wide level.
  • Ensure that the software you build is reliable and easy to support in production. Be prepared to take your turn on call providing 3rd line support when it’s needed
  • Ensure that your team can build, test and release software with short lead times and a minimum of waste. Work to develop and maintain a highly automated Continuous Delivery

Your skills and experience

  • Scala Programming : Developers must be proficient in Scala, including functional programming concepts, object-oriented programming, and common libraries.
  • Apache Spark : Deep understanding is critica in Spark SQL, DataFrames, Datasets, RDDs (at least conceptually), performance tuning (e.g., partitioning, caching, shuffle operations), UDFs, Spark streaming (if applicable), understanding of Spark execution model.
  • SQL: "Majority of individual controls will involve externalized SQL scripts." This implies heavy reliance on strong SQL skills. Complex joins, subqueries, window functions, aggregate functions, DDL/DML, query optimization. Experience with various SQL dialects (e.g., Impala SQL, Trino SQL, Spark SQL) is a plus, but strong ANSI SQL is foundational.
  • Apache Airflow : The scheduler. Developers will need to write, maintain, and troubleshoot DAG. DAG authoring (Python), operators (especially custom or Spark/Kubernetes operators), sensors, XComs, Jinja templating, understanding of Airflow concepts (tasks, dependencies, pools, connections).
  • Git/GitHub : Code storage and collaboration. Branching strategies (e.g., Git Flow, GitHub Flow), pull requests, code reviews, merging, rebasing, resolving conflicts.
  • Data Warehousing/Lake Concepts : Understanding the principles behind storing and processing large datasets, especially with the transition to Iceberg. ETL/ELT concepts, data modeling (star schema, snowflake schema), data quality, data governance, understanding of schema evolution.

Soft skills

  • Problem-solving: Ability to diagnose and fix complex issues in distributed systems.
  • Communication: Clearly articulate technical concepts and collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
  • Proactive Learning: Given the evolving tech stack (Iceberg, Trino), a willingness and ability to quickly learn new technologies is vital.
  • Attention to Detail: Especially important for data quality and robust control implementation.
  • Teamwork & Collaboration: Working effectively in an Agile environment.

Education/Qualifications

  • We are happy to consider candidates with a wide variety of educational backgrounds and qualifications. Qualifications in computer science, business and economics are beneficial for the role.
  • We also look favorably upon candidates with equivalent practical experience. This could have be gained in the workplace or in other contexts, such as contributing to open source software or working on personal projects.
