We have a robust, hands-on engineering culture dedicated to continuous learning, knowledge-sharing, technical skill development and networking. We are an essential part of the Bank’s technology platform and develop applications for many important business areas.

The Senior ABAP Engineer acts as a technical authority and escalation point for Deutsche Bank's mission-critical SAP applications. With full ownership of technical stability, this role leads the resolution of complex production issues, drives performance optimization initiatives, and mentors a team of engineers. The Senior Engineer combines expert-level ABAP knowledge with a deep understanding of production support methodologies to ensure maximum system reliability, implement robust solutions, and act as a key techno-functional advisor to business and functional teams.

  • Drives and owns the end-to-end Root Cause Analysis (RCA) process for major incidents, ensuring the implementation of robust and sustainable fixes.

  • Mentors junior team members in best practices for troubleshooting and problem-solving.

  • Defines technical standards for code fixes and enhancements to ensure they do not compromise system stability.

  • Acts as a technical approver for changes, providing expert opinion on risk, performance impact, and architectural integrity.

  • Drives a culture of continuous improvement by identifying and leading initiatives for automation, process enhancement, and performance tuning.

  • Utilizes advanced performance analysis tools (ST05, SAT, Code Inspector) to diagnose and resolve complex performance issues, including optimizing expensive SQL statements.

  • Acts as a techno-functional consultant, challenging functional requirements if they pose a technical risk and proposing superior alternatives.

  • Champions and drives Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles within the team, focusing on building highly reliable and scalable systems through proactive monitoring, automation, and incident analysis.

Skills

  • Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience in SAP ABAP development and/or production support.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing and alternating priorities with a constant focus on delivery.
  • Experience in IT delivery in a large enterprise, preferably within an Agile environment.

  • Solid understanding of the ABAP Dictionary, including tables, views, data elements, and lock objects.
  • Knowledge of the enhancement framework (Customer Exits, BAdIs, Enhancement Spots) and the ability to identify and debug logic within existing enhancements.
  • Experience with dynamic programming, field symbols, and data references.
  • Hands-on knowledge of monitoring, reprocessing, and debugging inbound and outbound IDocs, including understanding partner profiles and process codes.
  • Experience troubleshooting and analysing background jobs (SM37), including reading job logs and debugging active or completed jobs.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and resolving issues in batch input sessions (SM35).
  • Working knowledge of other interface technologies such as RFCs, BAPIs, and understanding of how to test and debug them.
  • Ability to use standard analysis tools (e.g., ST05 SQL Trace, SAT Runtime Analysis) to identify performance bottlenecks in ABAP code.
  • Foundational knowledge of modern ABAP on HANA concepts, including the "code-to-data" paradigm.
  • Awareness of ABAP Development Tools (ADT) in Eclipse and modern ABAP syntax (e.g., inline declarations, constructor expressions).
  • Basic understanding of Core Data Services (CDS) Views and ABAP Managed Database Procedures (AMDPs) and how to analyse them during a debugging session.
  • Exposure to other SAP modules like MM or SD is beneficial.
  • A clear understanding of production support processes: Incident, Problem, Change, and Knowledge Management.
  • Acts as role model for individuals aspiring to follow an expert career path by passionately promoting the merits of expert roles and the contribution of their Profession.
  • Challenges the 'status quo' and influences key stakeholders to ensure industry best practice is adhered to within their area of expertise.
